Harry Richman – I Love A Parade(1932)

recorded in NYC August 15, 1932
Richman shows off his sometimes-overpowering personality on this Harold Arlen-Ted Koehler song, written for the 1931 Warner Bros. Technicolor film “Manhattan Parade,” which starred Winnie Lightner, Charles Butterworth, and the comedy team of Smith & Dale. Due to rising public apathy toward movie musicals in the U,S,, full song performances of this and other numbers were cut from the final domestic release of the film (but were retained for foreign issue). “I Love A Parade” can still be heard over the opening and closing credits, however. For the Arden & Ohman recording of the song, listen here

One of Lombardo’s most famous early hits, which he re-recorded for 78 release in both 1936(Victor) and 1941(Decca).

Peerless Quartet with Billy Murray – My Dream Of The Big Parade(1926)

recorded in Camden, New Jersey, Church Bldg. June 30, 1926
released September 1926
Though it’s been decades since I purchased this 78, it still never fails to move me. The electrically recorded voices of Henry Burr and Billy Murray, two giants of early 20th Century popular music, are heard together in this Al Dubin-Jimmy McHugh tribute to the fighting servicemen of The Great War.
Though artist billed as the Peerless Quartet, the label also indicates vocal by a male quintet. Aside from the Murray narrative, the five singers at this session (according to the Victor ledgers) were Burr, Monroe Silver, Carl Mathieu, James Stanley, and Stanley Baughman.

What Is a Leap Year?
