【スコーキアン】

南アフリカの音楽で、最初に世界にアピールしたのは『スコーキアン（スコキアン）』でしょう。
作者は南アフリカの北隣、当時で云うところのローデシアの出身のAugust Musarurwaという人。
当初日本ではペレス・プラードの演奏がヒットしたためラテン音楽と勘違いされてました。
小林旭主演の『ギターを持った渡り鳥』（1959/10/11封切）の、白木マリが踊るシーンでバンドがそっくりな曲を演奏しますが、たぶん『スコーキアン』でしょうあれは。

The Bulawayo Sweet Rhythm Band – Skokiaan（1947）

Found out a little more about this record. Seems this tune is an old Zulu drinking song. This original South African label recording was very popular in Johannesburg and an American music producer heard it and brought a record to the US and played it. It was an instant hit and about 25000 more of the SA label records were ordered. Very quickly, the LONDON label began making this record with IN THE MOOD on the flip side. Next thing you know, it was covered by a dozen or so US artists in the mid 1950s and this label was relegated to obscurity. Too bad. Apparently, this song on this label is hard to find. I’m very happy to have this rare one in ‘E’ condition!

This original version, led by the song’s Rhodesian composer August Msarurgwa, was initially issued in 1950 with the artist credit showing as “The African Dance Band of the Cold Storage Commission of Southern Rhodesia.” The identical track was then reissued in 1954–but as by “The Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band”–and was one of four versions to enter the Billboard charts that summer. The U.S. best-seller was by Ralph Marterie

The most popular 1954 U.S. releases of “Skokiaan” by Ralph Marterie, The Four Lads, and the Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band are also available on the78prof channel.

映画『ハタリ！』Hatari!（１９６１年、米）の舞台はタンガニーカ(Tanganyika)＝現タンザニア連合共和国に属する一地域。
『野生のエルザ』Born Free（１９６６年、英）はそのタンザニアの北に位置するケニア共和国の話でした。
どちらもテーマ曲がヒットしましたね。
『アフリカの女王』African Queen（１９５１年、英）は１９１４年、ドイツ領コンゴの話。
ボブ・ホープとビング・クロスビーの『アフリカ珍道中』Road to Zanzibar（１９４１年、米）は、これはもうリアルなアフリカとは縁遠いアチャラカでした。
サイレントの時代から幾度となく映画化されてきたエドガー・ライス・バローズの小説『ターザン』は英領西アフリカ（ガンビア、シエラレオネ、ゴールド・コースト＝現ガーナ、ナイジェリアなど）へ向かう航路の途中にあるアフリカ中部西海岸の近辺が舞台になってます。映画が当たったため、原作もシリーズ化されました。
