“Gone With The Wind” Tara’s Theme(Main Title)(1939)
Orig. Soundtrack, conducted by Max Steiner
Wow! What a memorable opening to the most popular motion picture of its era, with music composed and conducted by Max Steiner. His Oscar-nominated score, however, was not among the Selznick-MGM film’s eight Academy Award winners (losing out to “The Wizard Of Oz”).
For whatever reason, no commercial recordings of this famous theme were issued during the movie’s original run, but upon its highly successful U.S. re-release in 1954 there were a number of new singles on the market…both instrumental (LeRoy Holmes and with Mack David’s “My Own True Love” lyric (Margaret Whiting with Nelson Riddle.

In late 1954, many years before it could be seen on television (let alone on home video), “Gone With The Wind” received a much-publicized and eagerly-awaited theatrical re-release. Though (for whatever reason) there had been no commercial recordings made of Max Steiner’s famous theme during the blockbuster film’s original 1939-40 run, several new versions were issued this time around, both vocal (as “My Own True Love”) and instrumental. Coming off the most successful hit of his career earlier that year, Holmes patterned “Tara’s Theme” similarly to his lushly-arranged “The High And The Mighty,” again spotlighting famed whistler Fred Lowery.

America first heard this now-familiar Max Steiner melody in late 1939 during the opening credits of “Gone With The Wind” (listen here: https://youtu.be/Gnig_P7o8gs ), but it wasn’t until the film’s re-release in 1954 that we finally heard the new lyrical treatment titled “My Own True Love.” This lushly-arranged Margaret Whiting/Nelson Riddle version was just one of several singles on the market that year, and the song would later become a popular release for both Jimmy Clanton in 1959 and The Duprees in 1962

The Duprees followed up their top-10 hit “You Belong To Me” with this also-popular release, featuring music by movie composer Max Steiner (the familiar “Tara’s Theme” from “Gone With The Wind”) and lyrics by well-known songwriter Mack David (Hal’s older brother).

Al Allen – Scarlett O’Hara(1964/02)
Out of Los Angeles, just six months after L.A.’s Wrecking Crew supplied the backing track to the Phil Spector produced epic,’Be My Baby’ for the Ronettes, they were back at Gold Star Studios with Unical Records owner, Al Allen with musical inspiration from that session. For this recording date they would be hammering out a cover version of’Scarlett O’Hara’ which had been a hit instrumental for Jet Harris & Tony Meehan in the United Kingdom in the spring of 1963. In the United States, Lawrence Welk had some minor success with the tune that year as well. This Spectorian take on the tune is an energetic mix of the Ronettes”Be My Baby’, Jack Nitzsche’s’The Lonely Surfer’ and the Marketts”Out Of Limits’. Incidentally, all of those recordings featured the talents of the’Wrecking Crew’ as well. For whatever reason, despite a top notch arrangement and powerful sound, the Unical disc failed to ignite any chart action and disappeared into obscurity. Al Allen would ultimately shutter his record company doors a mere five months later after issuing just two more singles with the label.
