萩原朔太郎（１８８６～１９４２年）は近代口語自由詩の先覚者の一人である。第一詩集「月に吠（ほ）える」に「竹」という初期作品が載っている。教科書にも、多く採用されたので、よく知られた詩であろう。

２人の女の子に恵まれながら、離婚に追い込まれ「父は永遠に悲壮である」との言葉を吐かざるを得なくなる。
長女の萩原葉子は子どもの目で、晩酌で次第に酔っていく父親の生態を静かに観察。「父はお酒を飲むと、まるでたあいない子供になってしまう」（「父・萩原朔太郎」筑摩書房）と書く。赤ん坊のように、食べ物をこぼし、手品をして見せる。
レコードに合わせ、端唄を熱心に覚えようとする朔太郎。「酔った顔で唄（うた）うその声にいつも、私は父の孤独を思った」と。

今年は６月１７日が「父の日」だそうだ。
父親についてはあまり楽しい思い出が無い。いや、むしろ忘れたいこと、忘れてしまったことのほうが多い。
数年前 介護で下の世話までして看取ることになったが、癌摘出手術の待ち時間のことや遺体搬出時の状況や斎場のムードとか、そういうことのほうが記憶に鮮明だ。
多分私は父親ほど長生きはできないと思う。長生きしすぎるのも考えものだろう。
