Karen Verros – I Can’t Remember Ever Loving You(1965/12)

The flipside to the second of only three known singles issued between October 1965 and May 1966 by Karen Verros. All released on the Dot label, Karen’s first disc,’You Just Gotta Know My Mind’, is a raucous, guitar laden slab of girly rock and is very highly coveted and collectable. While Miss Verros does possess a lovely voice, her final Dot single is, unfortunately, a real yawner. The primo coupling however, is on Karen’s second single which features a cover of the 1964 Crystals tune,’Little Boy’ backed with a wonderful version of the early Randy Newman composition,’I Can’t Remember Ever Loving You’. Jack Nitzsche, the arranger on the Phil Spector produced original version of’Little Boy’, was back on duty for the Verros version. Recorded at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Recorders, Nitzsche provided a marvelous’Wall of Sound’ arrangement complete with castanets, tambourine, an army of strumming guitars, swirling strings and drums a’ plenty for the plug side. The B-side is quite a powerful and orchestral production that could have actually been issued as an A-side on its own as it really is that good. Although Karen performed both of the songs on television , neither side managed to make a dent on the charts. This Dot single is quite the value for the money, and although desirable and on many’want lists’, this one is still obtainable for collectors.

Leo Reisman and his Orchestra – Jalousie (Jealousy)(1931)

recorded in NYC February 25, 1931
Reisman’s recording of the 1925 tango was made in early 1931 but sat on the shelf for a year before Victor issued it in 1932. The structure of the tune’s arrangement matches the later and more familiar Boston Pops version, though the smaller Reisman orchestra and recording studio acoustics give it a much more intimate sound than we’re accustomed to hearing with the Fiedler.

Geraldo’s Gaucho Tango Orchestra – Jalousie(Jealousy)(1932)
vocal: Gino Berni

recorded in London January 20, 1932
The original 78rpm single was issued on (UK) Columbia CB-417
Introduced as a 1920s instrumental, we are most familiar with the 1940s-50s lyric that was popularized most successfully by Frankie Laine in 1951; and that lyric was composed under a pseudonym by the same wordsmith–English poet Winifred May–as was this much earlier and different treatment by the British band of Geraldo (Gerald Bright).

Xavier Cugat and his Hotel Waldorf-Astoria Orchestra – Jalousie(1935)

recorded in NYC September 5, 1935
This is the earliest of three commonly-found Cugat recorded versions of Jacob Gade’s familiar 1925 tango.

Boston “Pops” Orchestra – Jalousie(Jealousy)(1938)
conducted by Arthur Fiedler

recorded in Symphony Hall, Boston on July 1, 1935
Though the familiar 1925 Jacob Gade tango (aka “Tango tzigane”) had previously been recorded by others, it was Fiedler’s famous version which eventually became one of the all-time best-selling Victor Red Seal releases. This “Jalousie” track had been recorded back in mid-1935 but remained unissued until 1938, paired on the flip side with a 1937 waxing of de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance.”

Harry James and his Orchestra – Jalousie(Jealousy)(1946 version)

recorded November 13, 1946
Instrumental of the familiar Jacob Gade tango, originally released on the 78 flipside of “The Man With The Horn.”

Hugo Winterhalter and his Orchestra with vocal group – Jealous Heart(1949)

recorded August 1949
Billboard Chart Peak: 10 (radio play)

Jack Owens – Jealous Heart(1949)
orchestra conducted by Danny Mendelsohn

Previously a #2 Tex Ritter country record in 1945, “Jealous Heart” was transformed into a mainstream 1949 pop hit by singer Al Morgan (also posted). Among the various cover versions released at the time, Breakfast Club vocalist Owens’ #11 jukebox hit was the most successful.

Al Morgan – Jealous Heart(1949)

Picked up by London Records following its release on the independent Universal label, this track by Chicago entertainer Al Morgan went on to spend 6 full months on the national singles charts, peaking at #4 on the best-sellers (see also the Jack Owens version). Though “Jealous Heart” was a ‘new’ song for many in 1949, it had previously been a #2 country music hit in 1945 for singing cowboy Tex Ritter.

Peter Lind Hayes & Mary Healy – Rememb’ring(1955/08/08)

Well, their names are on the label, but maybe Peter and Mary got stuck in traffic on the way to the studio. This revival of the 1924 Duncan Sisters hit achieved a bit of attention during autumn 1955.
