Abe Lyman & his California Orchestra – Of Thee I Sing–Dance Medley(1932)
vocal: Phil Neely, Frank Sylvano and Dick Robertson

A 12-inch Brunswick medley of the familiar Gershwin showtunes “Of Thee I Sing,” “Who Cares,” and “Love Is Sweeping The Country” (but good luck finding any other period commercial recordings of that third title). The musical “Of Thee I Sing” (book by George S. Kaufman & Morrie Riskynd, score by George & Ira Gershwin) opened the day after Christmas 1931, played 441 performances, and starred Victor Moore.
Johnson-Shirley ADBORAF notes that due to the presence of Bennie Krueger and four different vocalists at this session, it’s possible that this and the other titles from that date were actually perfomed by the ARC house band using Lyman’s name.
Session data also indicates that some weeks earlier (January 8th), both this and the flipside (Medley from “The Laugh Parade”) had been recorded in longer-duration tracks that were issued on a fine-groove version of the same-numbered Brunswick 20103. The “Of Thee I Sing” side purportedly ran 5:35 as opposed to the 4:33 standard-groove duration heard on this post.

The Whiteman-Crosby “Great Day” was issued on the flip side of this Columbia’potato-head’ 78 release.

Ronettes -(Baby), I Can Hear Music(Phil Chapman mix, 2016)

Philles 118 – BABY, I LOVE YOU (1963)
Philles 133 – I CAN HEAR MUSIC (1966)
Phil Spector and the’Wall of Sound’ aficionado of the highest order, PHIL CHAPMAN, spent a cloudy London afternoon one weekend in August 2016, layering the musical elements of these two classic Ronettes tracks. Quite a clever Spectorian mix to say the least. It certainly adds a new listening dimension to these songs which are sheer perfection to begin with.
