Dinah Shore with Paul Laval and his Woodwindy Ten – Star Dust(1941)
recorded in NYC August 18, 1941
This track was issued as one of eight in Victor’s third of four early-1940s album sets that featured cast members of NBC’s weekly program “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street.” The tongue-in-cheek presentations of jazz, blues and Dixieland were performed by studio musicians led by Henry Levine and Paul Laval with vocals during the early seasons by Dinah Shore, Lena Horne and Linda Keene. Spoken introductions to the four instrumental tracks on this album are provided by Gene Hamilton. Wikipedia’s entry “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” has additional details about the program.
All eight of these individual album tracks are also available for continuous sequential listening in a single 25-minute video posted under the title “1941 full album: NBC’s Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street II”
Star Dust (Parish-Carmichael) by Dinah Shore with Paul Laval and his Woodwindy Ten, transferred from Victor 27622, originally issued in Victor album P-86, recorded in NYC August 18, 1941
Other Victor albums featuring music from the CMSOLBS include:
P-56 NBC’s Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street (Dinah Shore, vocal)
P-82 Birth Of The Blues (Lena Horne, vocal)
P-119 Strictly From Dixie (Linda Keene, vocal)
Sonny Kendis and his Stork Club Orchestra – Star Dust(1941)
(instrumental)
from the album “A Night At The Stork Club with Sonny Kendis”(1941) originally issued on 78rpm Columbia 36395
Hoagy Carmichael’s tune is taken at the most leisurely tempo among the tracks on this album. The three famous recordings of “Star Dust” by Shaw, Dorsey and Miller had all been issued within the previous year.
Track #1 of eight posted sides from the 1941 Columbia Records album set C-75 “A Night At The Stork Club,” dance arrangements of pre-1930 tunes conducted by Sonny Kendis, piano-playing leader of the small band at New York’s famed night spot The Stork Club. Though Kendis was given label credit on the original 78 discs, you’ll note that his name did not appear on the album’s cover or anywhere among the inside notes. It was prominently displayed, however, on Columbia’s later LP reissue…scans of which can be seen during the video. All eight of these individual album tracks are also available for continuous sequential listening in a single 21-minute video posted under the title “1941 full album: A Night At The Stork Club with Sonny Kendis.”
Glenn Miller and his Orchestra – Star Dust(1940)
recorded in NYC January 29, 1940
Hudson-DeLange Orchestra – Stardust(1937)
(instrumental)
recorded in NYC March 10, 1937
Benny Goodman and his Orchestra – Stardust(1936)
Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra – Star Dust(1936 version)
vocal: Edythe Wright
recorded in NYC April 15, 1936
And here also is Dorsey’s better-remembered “Star Dust” recording from 1941, which featured vocals by Frank Sinatra and The Pied Pipers
Paul Whiteman and his Concert Orchestra – Star Dust(1934)
vocal: The Kingsmen and John Hauser
The famous Hoagy Carmichael-Mitchell Parish tune is interestingly presented in Whiteman’s extended “concert style” arrangement of multiple tempo and key changes.
Louis Prima and his New Orleans Gang – Star Dust(1934)
vocal: Louis Prima
I’m not in possession of the actual disc used for this years-old transfer and am unable to locate the appropriate Brunswick label image anywhere online. If you have a copy and would like to send a scan, that would be great!
Jimmie Lunceford and his Orchestra – Star Dust(1934)
vocal: Henry Wells
Easygoing treatment of the standard was issued on the Decca flip of the entertainingly-popular Lunceford track “Rhythm Is Our Business”.
Louis Armstrong & his Orchestra – Star Dust(1931)
vocal: Louis Armstrong
For the flip side “Chinatown My Chinatown,”
Cab Calloway and his Orchestra – Stardust(1931)

Bing Crosby – Star Dust(1931)
orchestra conducted by Victor Young
One of the popular early vocal treatments of Hoagy Carmichael’s 1927 instrumental composition.
Ted Wallace and his Campus Boys – Star Dust(1931)

recorded in NYC May 29, 1931
Chester Leighton & His Sophomores – Star Dust(1931)

Ben Selvin as “Chester Leighton”
recorded in NYC April 22, 1931
Wayne King and his Orchestra – Star Dust(1931)
(instrumental)
Later more-commonly-spelled “Stardust,”
Isham Jones’ Orchestra – Stardust(1931)
(instrumental)
The song’s composer Hoagy Carmichael had first recorded “Stardust” (aka “Star Dust”) back in 1927 as an instrumental, the Isham Jones orchestra put it on wax in the spring of 1930, and in the year 1931 the tune finally caught on in a big way. Among the various vocal and instrumental versions on the market that year, this Jones treatment is purported to have outsold the others.
Hoagy Carmichael & His Pals – Stardust(1927)
1st Recording Of “Stardust”
One of the most-performed and recorded songs in American history, presented in its original form as a mid-tempo jazz instrumental (Mitchell Parish’s lyrics weren’t added until 1929). Carmichael would record the tune several more times over the years.
