綿花の価格が高騰している。ニューヨーク先物市場の2010年12月限月契約で1ポンドあたり105セントと、1ドルを超えて推移している。10年7月中旬以降で30セント近く、年初からは約2倍の上昇。1995年5月以来、15年5カ月ぶりの水準となった。
綿花を100％輸入に頼る日本では、紡績業者やアパレルメーカーが大きな打撃を被りそう。衣料品などはデフレの影響で、原料価格の上昇を商品価格に転嫁できないためだ。

高値になっても、買い付けの「主役」は中国。「リーマンショック以降、綿花は生産を減らしました。天候不順も原因でしょうが、一方で中国などの旺盛な需要に追いつかなくなったというのが現状でしょう」と、日本綿花協会はみている。
これに加えて、綿花の供給状況を複雑にしているのがインドの貿易制限だ。

戦前は日本といえば絹糸で、繭価が騰がった下がったと大騒ぎしたものですが、化学繊維全盛のこのご時世に、綿花の相場価格の高騰でアパレル業界に深刻な影響が出そうだなんて、思いもよらぬニュースです。
それに日本が綿花を１００％輸入していたとはチートモ知らなんだ。
この分じゃ低価格ジーンズが店頭から消えるかもしれませんね。
