東京都は２０日、利根川水系の江戸川から取水した三郷浄水場（埼玉県三郷市）の水から、水質基準を超える有害物質のホルムアルデヒドを検出したため、同浄水場からの送水を停止したと発表した。他の浄水場からの送水に切り替えており、断水などの影響はないという。
三郷浄水場で２０日午前１時半に採取した水から、国の基準値（１リットル当たり０・０８０ミリグラム）を上回る同０・０９９ミリグラムを検出した。

東京都中央区の銀座中学校の生徒らが１８日、水についての学習で安曇野市を訪れた。東京・銀座と言えば柳並木で知られるが、実は銀座の柳は安曇野産で、銀座中にある柳もその子孫とされる。生徒らはこの日、柳をめぐる「縁」について初めて知り、驚いていた。

米軍がベトナム戦争での実戦を前提に、１９６０年から約２年間にわたり、国頭村と東村の米軍北部訓練場内と周辺一帯で猛毒のダイオキシンを含む枯れ葉剤「オレンジ剤」の試験散布を実施していたことが５日までに分かった。当時の枯れ葉剤散布作戦の立案に関わった米陸軍の元高官が沖縄タイムスの取材に対して明らかにした。

作戦が立案された背景について元当局者は、「南ベトナム解放民族戦線が潜むジャングルの絶滅を目的としていた」と説明。北部訓練場を選んだ理由について「制約もなく、気候や立地状況などがベトナムのジャングルに似ていたことから、実戦を想定したものだった」と述べた。

携帯電話網（3G／LTE）からコンピュータ網（Wi-Fi）が主役へ
電話機能をベースとしたフィーチャーフォンに代わって、コンピュータ機能をベースとしたスマートフォンが爆発的に普及し、その台数とともにトラフィック（データ量）も急増しています。スマートフォンは、フィーチャーフォンの10倍以上のトラフィックを出すとも言われ、このような状況に対処するため、電話網から発展したセルラー網（3G／LTE網）は、通信事業者が次々に高速・大容量化（ブロードバンド化）を図り、2012年2月からは本格的な110MbpsのLTE時代がスタートします。しかし、このような通信事業者の展開もトラフィックの爆発には追いつかずパンク寸前の状態となり、通信障害が頻繁に発生していることが、大きく報道されています。
このような背景のなかで、コンピュータ網として発展してきた無線LANネットワーク、すなわちWi-Fiネットワークが急速に注目を集め、通信事業者は相次いでWi-Fiアクセスポイント（基地局）の増設を発表し、パンク寸前の状態を回避するためにシステムの構築を急いでいます。

米リパブリック・ワイヤレスは2011年11月8日、Wi-Fi（無線LAN）網の利用をデフォルトとする新たな携帯サービスの提供を開始すると発表した。当初はベータ版として提供される。2012年の早い時期にベータ版のバージョン2をリリースし、正式サービスの導入に踏み切る計画である。

スマホやタブレットＰＣが普及して、携帯電話（従来のガラケー≒フィーチャーフォン）が淘汰されつつある。これはたいていの人なら感じてる現状認識です。
携帯電話のダイヤルアップでつなぐよりも安くて速けりゃ言うことはないし、スカイプみたいなサービスでテレビ電話さえ出来ちゃうんだから、Wi-Fiバンザイってことにもなります。
ネットインフラの、なお一層の増強が待たれるところですね。

京都学園大学バイオ環境学部の辻村茂男准教授はいう。
「今回のホルムアルデヒドの発生は、原因となる物質が浄水場で使われる塩素と化学反応したためではないかといわれています。しかし、原因となりうる物質は何百種類も存在し、中には植物性プランクトンまで原因になりえます。原因を突き止めるのは難しいかもしれません」
その後、ホルムアルデヒドの濃度は下がったものの、原因はいまだわかっていない。
埼玉県は２１日、再発防止のため、工場などに化学物資の新たな排出基準を明確に定めるなどの法規制を国に求める方針を固めた。
しかし今後も、他の浄水場でも、ホルムアルデヒドが検出される可能性は高いという。環境工学が専門の京都大学松井三郎名誉教授がいう。
「今回の大規模な発生は珍しいですが、除草剤なんかでもホルムアルデヒドは発生する。すべての原因を取り除くことは極めて難しいでしょう。
今回、オゾンや活性炭を利用した高度浄水施設のある浄水場ではホルムアルデヒドは検出されませんでしたが（施設はあるものの、稼動させていなかった浄水場では、ホルムアルデヒドを検出）、こうした施設を作るには数億円もかかってしまうんです。現状ではいつ他の浄水場で発生してもおかしくないでしょう」

鳩山由紀夫元首相は６日のＢＳ１１の番組で「民主党を作った張本人として『民主党を割る』という話は口が裂けても、本来は言うべきことではない。ただ、民主党より国民の暮らしが大事だという立場からどう行動すべきか考えねばならない時を迎えている」と述べ、消費増税法案の採決を巡って離党することもあり得るとの考えを示唆した。

British Movietone
Researching our content featuring Vera Lynn last week I stumbled upon this lovely film. It’s much longer than a normal British Movietone newsreel item, I wonder if it was shown in cinemas as a short? As London prepares to emerge from lockdown, this film reminds me of all that is beautiful about my city. It is so sumptuous, I would bet good money that this was filmed by ace Movietone cameraman Paul Wyand.
