TOHRU HIRANO

http://haru55.blogspot.com/2011/11/blog-post_18.html

Bob Dylan – It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue(1965)

The Beckett Quintet -(It’s All Over Now)Baby Blue(1965/09)

After scraping enough money together, this group headed west from New Mexico to Hollywood. Memebers included Tommy Muncrief – vocals, Tim Taylor – guitar, Barry Dunkeson – guitar, Norm Reccius – bass guitar and Steve Nagle – drums. They eventually hooked up with Nick Venet for a session at Gold Star and recorded the Tim Taylor composition,’NO CORRESPONDENCE’ and the Bob Dylan tune,’(It’s All Over Now) BABY BLUE’. First issued in September 1965 on the tiny GEMCOR label, the band signed with A&M who reissued the disc in November that year. Work began recording tracks for a forthcomming A&M album which Herb Alpert, Tommy LiPuma and Jack Nitzsche were invoved. Along with the two previously recorded tracks a couple more were finished but after Steve Nagle received his draft notice and entered the military in early 1966, the band dwindled apart and the album was never finished.

Darleen Carr – When It’s Over(1966/07)

The first of only two officially issued singles by actress/vocalist, Darleen Carr. The youngest of three sisters, Miss Carr made a nice living appearing in many television programs throughout the 1960’s up into the 1990’s. Noticed by Walt Disney who was looking for a young actress to follow in the footsteps of Annette and Haley Mills who were no longer with his company, Darleen signed up with the corporation. Among the limited work she did while there was to perform the singing voice of’Shanti’, the girl in the animated motion picture,’The Jungle Book’. Darleen simultaneously was picked up by RCA Victor Records. The first outing was the coupling of,’Anybody’s Girl’ with’When It’s Over’ issued in July 1966. While the A-side has become a collectible slab of vinyl for the dancing Northern Soul crowd, the hidden and practically unknown flip side is quite nice. Composed by Don Atfeld and Jill Gibson, who was the girl friend of Jan Berry (Jan & Dean), the only known other version was recorded by Jan & Dean in 1964 and included as the flip side of their Liberty single,’Sidewalk Surfin’. Darleen’s performance on the A-side of this disc is interesting in that she sings for the most part, in the lower register of her voice and sounding very much like a teenage singer. Considering that she was just fifteen years old, that shouldn’t be surprising. It is on the Gibson – Atfeld B-side,’When It’s Over’, where her controlled, and sounding years beyond her age voice really shines. With members of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ delivering a beefy,’Wall of Sound’ backing track that was more than likely arranged by a non-credited Perry Botkin Jr., the simple little Jan & Dean tune became something quite special. A quality disc, with two outstanding sides that sadly, was tossed into the mile high heap of obscure L.A. recordings.

Gene Pitney – It’s Over / It’s Over(Medley)(1977/10)
Producer: Jerry Fuller
Roy Orbison – It’s Over(1964/03)イッツ・オーヴァー

Jimmie Rodgers – It’s Over(1966/04)

Having been in the recording business since 1958, Gene Pitney would eventually achieve hit-making status at the age of 21 after signing with then newly formed Musicor Records in 1961. Throughout the 1960’s he would find success with records such as,’Town Without Pity’,’(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance’,’Only Love Can Break A Heart,’24 Hours From Tulsa’,’Mecca’,’It Hurts To Be In Love’ and I’m Gonna’ Be Strong’ to name a few. Recording, stage and television performances, touring the world and composing hits for others,’Rubber Ball’ for Bobby Vee,’Today’s Teardrops’ for Roy Orbison,’He’s A Rebel’ for the Crystals and’Hello Mary Lou’ for Ricky Nelson, Gene Pitney enjoyed many accolades. By the 1970’s, recording had slowed down but Mr. Pitney kept busy in Europe where he had a large following and fan base. In the US, at an April 1977 session at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood, California, Gene recorded three tracks of which two would become the A&B sides of an Epic Records single. Produced by Jerry Fuller, the A-side was a medley of two well known songs both entitled,’It’s Over’. Roy Orbison and Bill Dees were the composers of Roy’s big hit in 1964 and Jimmie Rogers composed and recorded his song with the same title in 1966. The backing track of Gene’s’It’s Over’ medley was a powerful and atmospheric, lushly orchestrated extravaganza that would build and ebb with emotive tension culminating with an explosive finish. It is probably one of Gene Pitney’s finest performances put to recording tape. The single was pressed and released in June of 1977 but tanked in the US. What an absolute shame. Epic did issue the record in Germany, Holland, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Charlie Spivak and his Orchestra – I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’(1945)
(instrumental)

recorded December 19, 1944
Here is one of four instrumental sides issued in an album of “Porgy And Bess” selections (Victor SP-6) by trumpeter Charlie Spivak, voted by Downbeat Magazine readers as “1944’s Best Sweet Band.” Recorded late in the year, this collection of Gershwin tunes was released in early 1945 in the Victor Showpiece album format which consisted of two 78rpms encased in an illustrated heavy paper gatefold type container, as opposed to the usual sturdier ‘book’ type built to hold three or more discs.
All four of these individual album tracks are also available for continuous sequential listening in a single sub-12-minute video posted under the title “1944 full album: Charlie Spivak-Porgy And Bess.”

http://asumaken.blog41.fc2.com/blog-entry-4309.html
