Her recording spent four weeks at #1 on the best-sellers, while the posted versions by Martha Tilton and Mary Martin were also top-10.
Due to the 1942-44 strike against the record industry (aka “The Recording Ban”) by the American Federation of Musicians, no musical instruments could be utilized in the production of new commercial recordings by those companies which had not yet settled with the union, which included Victor at the time of this recording. Thus, only a vocal group is heard accompanying Dinah.

Roberta Sherwood – Have You Ever Been Lonely
from the album “The Country Sound…With Soul”(1963)

One of twelve tracks recorded at Bradley’s Recording Studio (The Quonset Hut) in Nashville by leather-lung vocalist, Roberta Sherwood. Having risen to popularity in 1956 at the age of 43, by the time this ABC Paramount LP was recorded, she had already racked up 12 LP’s primarily with Decca, one with Harmon Records and one with ABC Paramount. At the time, Sherwood proclaimed that the Nashville album was the best album that she had recorded to date. Produced by Charles Colvin and Bill Ficks, with arranger Cliff Parman, the backing voices of the Anita Kerr Singers and an ensemble of the’Nashville A-Team’, there was a substantial combination of talent in the mix. Roberta Sherwood’s vocal delivery could be raw and raspy as well as soft and warm but it was most certainly always soulful. Where in the world did she get her vocal inspiration and belting voice from? Raised and working on the road with her sister from the age of 11, they eventually created a nightclub act. In 1932 Roberta met Broadway actor, Don Lanning who she ultimately married in 1938. The two schlepped to Miami where they ran a nightclub that they also performed in. When the venue they were in lost its lease, the two obtained a concession to operate a hotel lounge. When Don was stricken with lung cancer in 1953, they lost their concession and failed at attempting to open another lounge. Roberta then seriously began to persue her solo singing career for the next several years but had little success. Then in late 1955 while performing at a Miami nightclub, actor Red Buttons attended her shows and became an immediate fan. He would bring along columnist Walter Winchell who gave her rave reviews. More nightclub dates followed and then a recording contract with Decca Records in 1956 where in that year she would have her only charting record,’Lazy River’ which peaked at #57 on the Billboard’Hot 100′ chart. More recording, continuous nightclub and television appearances and occasional big screen gigs followed. Her husband Don died in 1960 and their three sons Don, Robert and Jerry also worked in the entertainment biz. They appeared with Roberta in TV’s The Lucy Show and The Donna Reed Show and son Robert became a session drummer known most notably for playing with Elvis Presley’s band in 1970. Roberta worked well into the 1990’s and passed away in Sherman Oaks, California in 1999 at the age of 86.

The Chadons – Have You Ever Been Lonely(1963/07)

Out of Los Angeles, this obscure disc is for the most part, the whole creation of Chad Allen. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios in July 1963, the blonde teen heartthrob vocalist produced the entire session and issued it on his own record label. Don Ralke was on hand without credit as arranger and as was usually the case when engineer Stan Ross was at the console, in order to get the best possible recording, he inserted his uncredited expertise in vocal and musical arranging as well. The’A’ side,’Midnight Prayer’ would be featured on two Chadon Records singles. One pressing that displayed a busy and unconventional label design that was credited to Chad Allen and coupled with’Silly Girl’, and this pressing with a standard label design and credited to the Chadons however, only Chad Allen was featured on the record.
Chad Allen recorded over a string of various record labels in the 1960’s but is know most for his 1961 Smash Records single,’Little Lonely’. In 1963, with Faye Paris (mother of the Paris Sisters) as his manager, Chad Allen formed the Chadons which included Tisha Cooper and Cindy Sees who had recorded as the Good Girls for the Counsel label on’I’m In The Mood For Love’. After two years, Cindy left the Chadons and was replaced by Lyle Thompson. When Tisha left, Chad & Lyle continued to perform with two more female replacements before calling it quits. During their nearly ten year career, the Chadons not only made the rounds at the many clubs and venues around southern California but also throughout the United States and abroad.
Chad returned to performing solo in the 1970’s and then teaming up with Gary Heath in 1983, known as CHAD & GARY, the two recorded an album and appeared in many of the top hotels and clubs within the Palm Springs, California area.
Still together more than 30 years later, recently Chad & Gary have created a popular line of decorative patio accessories and 7′ by 9′ stunningly hand-painted umbrellas that they ship all over the country. Their business,’Canvas In the Garden’, is featured and shown regularly with the La Quinta Arts Foundation.
A wealth of gratitude goes to Chad Allen and Gary W. Heath for contributing their photos and musical career recollections for this video.
