One of ten selections from the pictured 16-inch 33 1/3 electrical transcription disc–aka “radio transcription” or “broadcast transcription”–containing music recordings created and licensed exclusively for radio station use (not issued for sale on commercial 78rpm discs).
The King’s Men vocal quartet–active on radio, on records, and in movies during the 1930s &’40s–consisted of award-winning composer, vocal arranger, lyricist, and conductor Ken Darby, plus Rad Robinson, Jon Dodson, and Bud Linn. Between 1940 and 1953 they were featured vocalists on the “Fibber McGee and Molly” radio program where they were accompanied (as here) by the show’s musical director Billy Mills.

The Sportsmen – What Do You Do In The Infantry(1943)

Prior to becoming regulars on Jack Benny’s radio program during the 1940s, The Sportsmen Quartet had performed on the voice tracks of various Warner Brothers cartoon shorts. Famed songwriter Frank Loesser composed this march-tempo tune during his WW2 duty tour with the Army Air Force.
This was one of the’recording ban’ releases, performed a cappella (all vocal…no musical instruments) due to the ongoing strike against the recording industry by James C. Petrillo’s American Federation of Musicians which began August 1, 1942, and remained in effect for each of the major labels until they reached agreement on a new contract with the union.

Glenn Miller’s former alto sax and guitar player are in their newer roles of bandleader and vocalist for this Irving Berlin tune from his 1942 stage musical “This Is The Army.” Also from that show was the ballad hit “I Left My Heart At The Stage Door Canteen,” which is included in this collection by both the Sammy Kaye and Charlie Spivak bands.

Billy Ford – This Is Worth Fighting For(1964/03)

Out of Los Angeles, this 1964 release is one of the many arrangements that Jack Nitzsche created for a variety of artists signed to the Reprise label. ‘This Is Worth Fighting For’ has a gradual building arrangement with impassioned vocals by Billy Ford singing lyrics that tread into the same story telling territory as the 1965 release by June Adams on Roulette Records entitled,’The Human Race’.
In 1967, producer Al Scmitt and arranger, Nick DeCaro along with many of the same musicians issued another version of the tune sung marvelously by GIL BERNAL and released on RCA Victor.

This was recorded some years before Curtis transitioned into his better-known career as actor in a series of western movies and TV shows (most notably as Festus in “Gunsmoke”).
Composed by Edmund Gruber in 1918 as “The U.S. Field Artillery March,” this was among the many patriotic tunes recorded in the weeks following 12/7/41. Note the absence of brass instruments in this and other recordings made by Fields’ “New Music” band from this period.

“Off we go into the wild blue yonder!” Subtitled “Official Song of the United States Army Air Corps,” this familiar piece was written in 1939 by professional musician Robert MacArthur Crawford. 第二次世界大戦の欧州戦線において、当初中立だったアメリカが1941年3月、『武器貸与法』を成立させイギリス支援を開始、 同年8月9日、ルーズヴェルトとチャーチルが反ファシズムで合意(大西洋憲章)、同年12月の真珠湾攻撃を受け、正式参戦となった。
この歌は3月の録音なので、恋愛を戦争に喩える心のゆとりがあったのだろう。

Peerless Quartet with Billy Murray – My Dream Of The Big Parade(1926)
アメリカが第一次世界大戦(1914/07/28~1918/11/11)に参戦したのは末期に近くなった1917年だったが、兵士の犠牲は大きかったようだ。この楽曲は終戦直後に行われた帰還兵の凱旋パレードを回想する内容で、悲惨な戦場の様子や、毒ガス、潜水艦、戦車、手榴弾などの近代兵器にも言及している。好戦・厭戦どちらでもなく、犠牲者や負傷者、その家族・友人らを思い平和の尊さを表現しているように感じられる。
途中から語りが入る構成で、最後はアカペラのコーラスになる。

Though it’s been decades since I purchased this 78, it still never fails to move me. The electrically recorded voices of Henry Burr and Billy Murray, two giants of early 20th Century popular music, are heard together in this Al Dubin-Jimmy McHugh tribute to the fighting servicemen of The Great War.
Though artist billed as the Peerless Quartet, the label also indicates vocal by a male quintet. Aside from the Murray narrative, the five singers at this session (according to the Victor ledgers) were Burr, Monroe Silver, Carl Mathieu, James Stanley, and Stanley Baughman.
