“Pine Top” Smith – Pine Top’s Boogie Woogie(1929)
recorded in Chicago December 29, 1928
Also commonly spelled “Pinetop,” boogie-woogie pianist Clarence Smith had been given his nickname as a child from his liking for climbing trees. It was this recording that later provided the inspiration for Tommy Dorsey’s classic big band hit “Boogie Woogie.” Smith died from a gunshot wound in a Chicago dance-hall fight only weeks after he made this track.

The song does not appear in that film, but did appear in’Keep’Em Flying,’ a 1941 release from the same production company and studio, and was therefore ineligible for a 1942 nomination. Martha Raye had performed it in that earlier film.

Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra – – T.D.’s Boogie Woogie(1950)
(origin of “Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie”)
By 1950 Tommy and RCA Victor had parted ways and he was now recording for Decca. Among the more interesting Dorsey efforts that year was this re-thinking of his classic 1938 recording of “Boogie Woogie,” a tune inspired by the Pine Top Smith composition with both the old and new arrangements (AFAIK) by Deane Kincaide.
In June 1957, following the recent deaths of both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, the existing Dorsey band was now under the direction of Lee Castle and was riding high with its recent million-selling hit “So Rare,” which had been issued under Jimmy Dorsey’s name and had featured Jimmy on sax. For one side of the follow-up single, Dick Stabile performed a Dorsey-style solo on “June Night,” and on the flip was a souped-up arrangement of this 1950 TD instrumental, renamed “Jay-Dee’s Boogie Woogie.” The 1957 “Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra” version was taken at a faster clip and dropped the final cooled-down trombone solo in favor of a loudly-building riff with a strong closing (perhaps more appropriate for the younger rock’n roll generation).
Two notes: Lee Castle had been in the TD trumpet section for the original 1938 “Boogie Woogie” session date; and the 1945 Jimmy Dorsey recording called “JD’s Boogie Woogie” was a different tune from the Pine Top Smith variations discussed here.
