Billy Joel – The Entertainer(1974/11 stereo 45 “cut it down to 3-oh-5” single version)
ビリー・ジョエル – エンターテイナー
produced by Michael Stewart
(debuted late’74) 1975 Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard 34, Cash Box 37, Record World 42 – A/C Peak: 30
Actually it does run a few seconds longer than that, but why quibble…the 3:05 label timing was an effective gimmick. Billy’s Mini Moog was featured in the driving arrangement of this clever song about the life of a performer/recording artist, first released in the “Streetlife Serenade” LP as a 3:41 cut, then edited and remixed for the single heard here.
His lyric about the song’s length being the reason for shortening the 45 is obviously not referring specifically to “The Entertainer,” as should be obvious from the deleted third verse which would have simply killed any possibility of mainstream Top 40 radio play. There was yet another verse, not on the LP track, which Billy has been known to perform in concert:
I am the entertainer
I dress to fit the style
I wear all kinds of sparkles
I flash the crowd my smile
But when the night is over
I stand without my clothes
Perspiration stains and varicose veins
My eyes bloodshot, my belly’s gone to pot
And there’s a pimple on my nose

“Good Golly, Miss Molly”? The plagiarism lawsuit was settled out of court.
*Chart geek info: Under a recently-altered methodology addressing ‘two-sided hits,’ Billboard was no longer assigning separate chart journeys to each individual side of a popular-selling single, but instead combining the sales/airplay data from both sides and listing the two titles together under one chart position, possibly achieving a higher rank than either side might have reached on its own. Thus, the top side “Travelin’ Band” and the lower-performing flip “Who’ll Stop The Rain” were shown together as a #2 charting disc in Billboard (and in Record World which was also doing the same). Cash Box continued with the traditional separation of sides, showing “Band” with a #5 peak and “Rain” at #14. For purposes of this project, we’ll include the more popular “Band” as a #2, but not “Rain” (when it is posted).
