英国で昨年、「心を健康にしておきたい」との理由から小説を書き始めた全盲の女性がいる。その前向きな気持ちで想像力は掻き立てられ、ペンはすらすらと走り、ストーリーは次々に生み出された――はずだったのだが、ある日、息子にその原稿を見せた女性は、思いもよらぬ言葉が返ってきたことに大きなショックを受けた。「何も書かれてないよ」。不運にも女性はインクが切れたペンを使っていたことに気が付かず、話を書き進めていたのだ。

そういえば盲人用の点字タイプライターとか、そういうのあったんじゃなかったっけ？

アースデイ（別名：地球の日、英: Earth Day）は、地球環境について考える日として提案された記念日である。4月22日のアースデイが広く知られているほか、それ以外の日のアースデイも存在する。

earth（アース）は「地上」「土」、the globe（グローブ）は球体としての「地球」のニュアンス。
terra（テラ／テルラ／テッラ）は、ラテン語由来で原義は「陸地」「大地」「大陸」。そこから転用し「地球」「金星・火星の大陸」等を指す言葉ともなった。

the earth にしろ the globe にしろ、惑星であることを意識した天文学的表現ですね。
地上の人間の目線では この世は world であるわけで、world を支えるものが earth であり globe であると。
earth などというと1965年あたりまでは、広野や大農地を連想させる「大地」としてのかなりダサいイメージ、あるいはＳＦ映画の題名のようにいささか安っぽい響きがありましたが、
レイチェル・カーソンの『沈黙の春（Silent Spring）』（1962）やアポロ計画あたりから生態系破壊・環境汚染が意識されるようになってきて、
それがまた企業活動とバッティング（× batting ◯ butting）して種々の軋轢を生み、
ＣＢＳのクロンカイトなどリベラル派の記者やキャスターがそうした問題を積極的に取り上げたため、余計に注目されるようになった、
という流れでした。
まさかそれが排出取引（Emissions Trading）などという偽善的・欺瞞的ビジネスとその市場を生む元になったとは、いったい誰が想像しえたでしょうか。

Jimmy Borges – The Earth Stood Still（1964）

Out of Los Angles, this 1964 release is one of two stellar singles that Jimmy Borges would issue on the tiny, Dymo label owned by Shelley Feinberg who was also the producer at the session. Recorded October 25, 1963 at United/Western in Hollywood,’The Earth Stood Still’ is a big, brassy & percussive production featuring a wonderful backing track arranged by the legendary, Perry Botkin Jr. that showcased the musical talent of L.A.’s elite, first call session players now known as the’Wrecking Crew’ with background vocals by the’Singers Incorporated’, which also included Jackie （Robin） Ward. Vocalist Eileen Barton, recorded’The Earth Stood Still’ earlier in 1963, which was issued on 20th Century-Fox, but it’s Jimmy’s version that is the winner. Jimmy Borges is still quite active in the music biz. He is currently living in Hawaii and sings jazz and music from the American songbook. His mellow and smooth voice suits that style of music to a’T’. He’s had quite an exciting career over the years not only in music but also with acting, and has come a long way since this 1964 release.

Yvonne Carroll – Earth Angel（1963/10）

Out of Los Angeles, this recording is a pretty decent cover of the 1950’s hit. Issued in October 1963, it is the second of four known singles that featured Miss Carroll’s name prominently on the Domain label. Recording just a handful of songs over three different labels （Domain, Challenge, Vee-Jay） between 1963 and 1966, Yvonne Carroll also supplemented her income by providing uncredited background vocals within the Hollywood studios during those years. With a smooth, soulful and smokey voice, it’s quite a shame that other than her mild hit,’Gee, What A Guy’ in 1963, she was unable to achieve greater success. An elusive and talented L.A. songstress that appears to have had no publicity photos taken and for the most part, completely disappeared from the scene after a few short years. Miss Yvonne Carroll, if you’re out there, your fans would love to hear from you…..

Have you heard this classic piece of doo-wop sound exactly like this before? As was the case with the also-posted single version of “The Wallflower” （aka “Dance With Me Henry”） by Etta James, the Penguins’ “Earth Angel” has rarely, if ever, been reissued on LP or CD in its actual original’hit version’ form. In fact, many of the various post-1955 45rpm reissues also contained the same dry, unsweetened, and unedited non-single-version track that we’ve been accustomed to hearing for the past 50+ years. With its touch of added reverb, here is the original-issue 45 & 78 single track, but the’bad news: label boss Dootsie Williams wanted to get right into the vocal, so he lopped off the first 5 seconds of that now-familiar piano intro!
Cleve Duncan and The Penguins spent three weeks atop the rhythm’n blues sales chart with “Earth Angel” and also accomplished the still-rare feat of bringing an R&B hit into the’pop’ top 10. Of the various cover versions released into the marketplace, the Crew-Cuts rendition was the most successful.

世界１７５カ国、約５億人が参加する世界最大級のフェスティバルといえば、「アースデイ」。４月２２日を「地球環境を考える日（アースデイ）」として、１９７０年にアメリカで始まったものだけど、日本でも１５年前から「アースデイ」を盛り上げるイベントが開催されていたのは、ご存じ？

今回の原発事故では日本は加害者だからねぇ。
マジで地球環境を考えたら、日本を含む先進国の政府や大企業はみなA級戦犯ということになる。
日本で「アースデイ」が盛り上がらないはずだ。
