欧州の債務危機をきっかけ、「世界恐慌」が現実味をおびてきた。毎日新聞社の「週刊エコノミスト」は２０１２年１月３、１０日合併号と１月２４日号の２回にわたり「世界恐慌」特集を掲載し、欧州の債務危機が「２１世紀型」世界恐慌に発展すれば、「３０年以上の世界的な大収縮を覚悟しなければならない」と指摘した。
「２０１２年 世界恐慌」（相沢幸悦、中沢浩志著 朝日新聞出版）や「世界恐慌の足音が聞こえる」（榊原英資著 中央公論新社）と、「世界恐慌」を題材にした本も続々出版されている。

テレビ生産：崩壊の足音
液晶ディスプレイ（ＬＣＤ）を生産している企業――韓国のサムスンやＬＧ、日本のシャープやパナソニック、そしてこれらの企業と競合する台湾企業――は１社として、ＬＣＤ生産で利益を上げていない。証券会社サンフォード・Ｃ・バーンスタインのアルベルト・モエル氏の試算では、業界は２００４年から２０１０年にかけて、累計で１３０億ドルの経済損失を被ったという。
それも顧客が各社の製品を嫌っているからではない。世界中のカウチポテト族は昨年、２億２０００万台の薄型テレビに１１５０億ドルを投じた。調査会社ディスプレイサーチによれば、さらに多くのディスプレイ――１１００億ドルに相当するディスプレイ約２７億枚――が、スマートフォンやタブレット、ゲーム機器などに使用されたという。にもかかわらず、ディスプレイメーカーの利益は影も形も見えない。

長辻象平 致死ウイルスの足音
「Ｈ５Ｎ１」という名前のウイルスがある。強毒性の鳥インフルエンザのウイルスだ。本来は鳥類のウイルスなのだが、鳥から人間への感染例もある。これにかかると半数以上の人が助からない。
このＨ５Ｎ１が強毒性を維持したまま、人から人にうつる能力を獲得すると大変なことになる。千万人単位の死者をだす世界的な大流行・パンデミックの発生だ。
じつは、このウイルスは研究者の手で人工合成されている。それだけでなく、遺伝子のどの部分が変化すると哺乳類が空気感染しやすくなるかも突き止められている。

ところでここ十数年、若い男が感極まって泣くところをよく見かけるようになりました。

岡田副総理は１０日の記者会見で、民主党が２００９年の衆院選政権公約（マニフェスト）に明記した２０１３年度までの国家公務員総人件費２割削減について、達成は難しいとの認識を示した。
岡田氏は「２割と書いたが、これを数で出そうとすると解雇しないといけない。今の公務員制度のもとでは出来ない」と述べた。

セブン＆アイ・ホールディングスは、２０１５年度をめどに、傘下のイトーヨーカ堂の正社員を半減させ、パートの比率を高める方針を固めました。
セブン＆アイによりますと、ヨーカ堂の正社員は約８６００人ですが、このうち半分の４３００人を同じグループのセブン－イレブン・ジャパンにコンビニの店長や経営指導員として転籍させ、新規の採用は抑制します。希望退職は実施しないということです。また、ヨーカ堂は、パート比率を現在の７７％から９０％に高める計画です。ヨーカ堂は、低価格競争の激化で営業利益が減少していますが、この人事政策で人件費を１００億円程度削減する方針です。
