After a radio editorial written and broadcast in June 1973 (CFRB, Toronto) by long time Canadian journalist-commentator Gordon Sinclair created an unprecedented response, he recorded it for commercial single release with profits going to the American Red Cross. Sinclair’s version was titled “The Americans (A Canadian’s Opinion)” and peaked at #24 on Billboard
Released the same month was this leading version by Byron MacGregor (real name Gary Mack), who was then news director at the powerhouse Top 40 AM station CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, right next door to Detroit. “Americans” purportedly sold 3 1/2 million copies in the U.S. and reached #1 on two of the three national singles charts. Proceeds were also donated to The Red Cross.

Written and originally broadcast June 5, 1973, over CFRB in Toronto as a radio editorial by long time Canadian journalist Gordon Sinclair, this commentary created an unprecedented response and was eventually released on a 45 in December ’73 with “Battle Hymn Of The Republic” added as background music. His profits from this commercial single went to the American Red Cross.
Released the same month was a version by Byron MacGregor (real name Gary Mack), who was then news director at the powerhouse Top 40 AM station CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, right next door to Detroit. His version, simply titled “Americans,” purportedly sold 3½ million copies in the U.S. and reached #1 on two of the three national singles charts (proceeds also donated to The Red Cross)
A spoof of Les Crane’s 1971 #8 pop charter for Warner Bros., National Lampoon went all out with their 1972 spoof. Not only did they record this charting single (#91 on the Billboard Hot 100), they also published a mock up of the original “Desiderata” parchment which they sold through the magazine! The female voice singing the chorus between Norman Rose’s narration is a then-unknown Melissa Manchester. Truly a classic in its own right, and today probably more desirable than Les Crane’s Top 10 hit. It’s funny!

Vocal and organ by B. B. Cunningham on this Memphis group’s popular nonsense-novelty hit. It was originally issued simply under the title “Let It All Hang Out” but changed soon after (probably due to radio stations’ hesitance to say it on the air). This is the Calloway cover of the pop-country hit by Buddy Starcher. The narrative is based upon a piece of folklore that first emerged in 1964, listing ‘coincidental’ parallels between the careers and deaths of Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy. While most are true, there are a couple of exceptions: 1) Although President Kennedy did have a secretary named Evelyn Lincoln, there is no record that President Lincoln had a secretary named “Kennedy,” 2) John Wilkes Booth was not born in 1839, but on May 10, 1838.

Sonny & Cher – Let It Be Me
ソニーとシェール – 二人は恋人
from the album “Look At Us”(1965)アイ・ゴット・ユー・ベイブ
The two years that Sonny Bono put in working along side producer, Phil Spector had its benefits. He and his girlfriend/partner/wife, Cherilyn, experienced first hand what a Spector recording session at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios entailed. Whether it be playing percussion instruments, adding handclaps or background vocals, Sonny Bono took it all in and applied it to his own recorded creations going forward. Utilizing the same ensemble of talented’Wrecking Crew’ musicians that played on the Spector dates, in the spring of 1964 a handful of recordings were made with he and Cher credited as’Caesar and Cleo. The duo would quickly change their name to simply, Sonny and Cher and then the abbreviated, Sonny & Cher. In late 1964, Sonny snagged a solo contract for Cher with Imperial Records while they would issue their records together on Atco. Cher’s debut single on Imperial,’Dream Baby’ (composed and produced by Sonny and credited to Cherilyn) is pure, girl pop’Wall of Sound’ power. While it made some noise locally in Los Angles, the record tanked nationally. The duos first Atco single, another Sonny Bono original entitled,’Just You’, is absolute sheer perfection. Another flawless, Spectoresque production that when released in the Spring of 1965, it just sat there (it would be re-promoted by Atco following their next hit record where it did make it into the Top 20). Little would the couple know that the next single would ultimately become their signature recording. ‘I Got You Babe’ was what Sonny wanted as the A-side but a pre-Atco recording entitled,’It’s Gonna Rain’ was slapped on the other side which Atlantic Records president, Ahmet Ertegun, favored pushing as the plug side. Sonny & Cher were even given a cameo appearance in the forgettable’B’ movie,’Wild On The Beach’ where they lip-synched the tune. But Sonny had such faith in’I Got You Babe’ that he cut an acetate of it at Gold Star post haste and promptly delivered it to KHJ radio jocks in L.A. where it’lit up the switchboards’. Alas, the rest regarding’I Got You Babe’ and the success of Sonny & Cher is well known history. Of course, when an artist has a potential hit record on their hands, an LP is a must which brings us to a lovely collection of tunes by Sonny & Cher on their debut Atco long player entitled,’Look At Us’. It may have been hastily assembled but once again, the magic combination of Sonny & Cher’s vocals with Sonny’s production, arrangements by Harold Battiste, the Wrecking Crew and engineer Stan Ross at Gold Star Studios, made for a delightlful, jingle-jangly, Spectorian collection of twelve tracks. One those stand out LP cuts is a cover of the Manny Curtis & Gilbert Becaud tune,’Let It Be Me’. Sonny slathered the production in echo and Phil Spector’s influence, creating a shimmering, atmospheric ultasonic listening experience that is so well done, it really could have been considered for a single release. A couple of Phil Spector tunes (’Then He Kissed Me’ and’Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love’) in the collection of songs are given a first class’Wall of Sound’ treatment along with a nod to Motown (’You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me’) which was encircled with the echo-laden reverberation of the legendary Gold Star echo chamber. An ultimately million selling album that is highly recommended.
