A curious release under the production of top musician and arranger, Bert Keyes who filled the studio with several musicians and a group of women considered to be east coast background vocalist royalty that included Cissy Houston, Dee Dee Warwick, Judy Street and Estelle Brown. Featured here is the flipside to a finger-snapping dance number entitled,’Do-Do Do Bah-Ah’ that has a style and sound similar to something by Martha & The Vandellas. Written by Maurice Shapiro who also composed the plug side,’Lady In My Heart’ is an atmospheric instrumental which has Cissy Houston out front and center displaying her beautiful soprano vocal. The disc went nowhere but certainly not to a lack in quality but rather, the lack in promotion by the Brill Building based record company that was on the verge of closing its doors for good.

This anthem of female empowerment was written by Helen Reddy and Ray Burton; and did you know that there was a shorter and quite differently arranged version which had originally appeared on her 1971 LP “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” and was also heard over the credits of the 1972 film “Stand Up And Be Counted”? Here’s Helen’s 1971 version. Capitol then had her make some changes and re-record the song on April 23, 1972, in the 45 release that we all know, but it took nearly six months from its initial appearance on the Hot 100 to finally make it all the way to the top.
