Harry Warren & Mack Gordon’s Oscar-winning song, memorably sung by Alice Faye in “Hello Frisco, Hello,” is represented here by the three 1943 recordings that made appearances on Billboard’s weekly Top-10 record chart. Of the three, this was the only recorded version using actual musical instruments and was backed on the flipside by “Comin’ In On A Wing And A Prayer,” which is also posted, as are the Dick Haymes and Frank Sinatra vocals of “You’ll Never Know.”
Quality note: This is a HIT label record, which during the current Recording Ban (a strike by the American Federation of Musicians) often signaled sub-par quality…in performance, engineering, and shellac. But those HIT’s, clandestinely recorded without union authorization by anonymous artists (somewhere across the border, according to some rumors), did provide record buyers with something they could not obtain anywhere else…newly-produced big band recordings of various popular song hits that emerged during the year 1943. Usually the only option for the crippled domestic labels was to release the tune via a cappella vocal arrangements.

This sparsely arranged treatment of the 1910 oldie turned out to be quite the popular hit…but not until nearly two years after it was recorded, and then by default. While audiences loved seeing and hearing Betty Grable sing this old-timey song in 1943’s “Coney Island,” the ongoing Recording Ban (AFM union strike) prevented the major labels from creating any new records that utilized union musicians. So Decca kept stores stocked with this disc, along with their brand new a cappella vocal recording by Dick Haymes & The Song Spinners (also posted).

With this 1910 oldie performed so fetchingly by Betty Grable in the current film “Coney Island,” people went to the record stores to take home a copy of the tune. Due to the Recording Ban, their choices were pretty much limited to this new voice-only version by Haymes and a two-year old recording by Dick Kuhn and his band, both of which became top-10 best-sellers. Kuhn’s version and the Haymes flipside “For The First Time” are also included in this 1943 collection.

Among the more popular of Duke’s 1940s record releases was the double number-one (R&B chart) two-sider “A Slip Of The Lip (Can Sink A Ship)” and this gorgeous instrumental Johnny Hodges showpiece. Songwriter Bob Russell, who also attached lyrics to Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me,” wrote words for “Sentimental Lady” and turned it into the ballad “I Didn’t Know About You.” There’s also a commonly reissued alternate take of this number floating around that has a different piano intro by Duke.

Gordon Jenkins and his Orchestra and The Weavers – So Long(It’s Been Good To Know Yuh)(1950)

During the 1940s, legendary folk balladeer (and father of Arlo) Woody Guthrie had performed as a member of The Almanac Singers with Pete Seeger and Lee Hays. After Pete and Lee formed The Weavers in 1948 with Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman, one of Woody’s “dust bowl ballads” that turned into a major record hit for them was this catchy 1935 tune, though with an altered set of lyrics that replaced Guthrie’s original political commentary with more mainstream subject matter. “So Long” reached #4 on the juke box chart and, like “Goodnight Irene” and “Tzena Tzena Tzena” from the previous year, was another full-blown production by Decca music director Gordon Jenkins.

The third of six singles that Miss Diane Maxwell would issue on the Challenge label between June 1958 and April 1960 (the last single was a duet with Jerry Fuller). Recorded in Hollywood in October 1958, at only sixteen years old Diane’s vocal ability was quite impressive as her power and control certainly had the sound of a vocalist well beyond her age. Composed by Barry De Vorzon,’I Know I Shouldn’t (But I Do)’ had the typical period style and sound of pop/rock recordings by the likes of M~G~M artist, Connie Francis and the recording engineer actually achieved a great drum/snare sound for the backing track. Diane was fortunate to also have had an LP issued on Challenge in both monophonic and stereo of which are both quite obscure and do not turn up very often. In the late 1950’s, Diane Maxwell performed and made appearances on local television programs often. She left Challenge and signed a recording contract with Capitol Records of which only two singles transpired in March and May of 1961 and then she fell off the musical radar. If she is still out there, that would make her a spry, 80 years old today in 2022.

After having spent a nearly three year stint as the lead vocalist of the girl group, the Chantels, nineteen year old Arlene Smith embarked on a solo career with this Big Top Records single to be her debut outing. Composed by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and entitled,’He Knows I Love Him Too Much’, it was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City in March 1961. Produced by then twenty-one year old Phil Spector who slathered the track with swirling strings, kettle drums and dramatic echo the marvelously atmospheric would unfortunately not achieve hit status. At that same point in time, Spector was just embarking on his relationship with Lester Sill out in Los Angeles where he would record a string of records by the Paris Sisters that were issued on the Sill and Lee Hazlewood label, Gregmark Records.’He Knows I Love Him Too Much’ would resurface a few months later in January 1962 by the Paris Sisters who would take the record to #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the Fall of 1961, Spector and Sill started Philles Records which would open a new, exciting an innovative chapter in popular American music and the rest was history.
