旅先で巡りあう人々は決まって何かトラブルや心理的ストレスを抱え込んでいて、アメリカ社会の影の部分を眺めているような、そんな感じでした。

　歌手として彼の名をご存知ない方でも、ＴＶ映画「ルート６６」のバズ役の青年だといえば、「あ・彼か」とその顔を思い出して頂ける方がおありでしょう。
　この番組で、タフで冒険好きな、典型的アメリカ青年に扮しているジョージ・マハリスは、今から３０年前、ニューヨークに生まれました。ブラッシング・ハイスクール在学中から学校演劇の舞台で歌手として活躍し、卒業後もダンス・バンドの歌手としてナイト・クラブなどに出演しました。その頃から彼は歌と演劇の両方を愛し、ドラマの勉強もしています。そしてＴＶショーに出演、マーロン・ブランド・タイプの性格俳優としてその演技力を認められました。１９５６年に映画「傷だらけの栄光」の主役候補に上り、ハリウッドに招かれましたが、これはご存知のようにポール・ニューマンに決ってしまいました。彼はその後有名なリ一・ストラスバーグに師事して演技を磨いた上ＴＶやブロードウェイの舞台に出演しています。
　ＴＶでは「ルート６６」のほか「裸の町」「ブレンナー」「スタジオ・ワン」等いろいろと出演していますが、劇場映画では７０ミリの大作「栄光への脱出」でデビューしました。
　歌手としての彼は、キャッシュ・ボックス誌の１９６２年度最優秀新人歌手に選ばれたのを初め、ビルボード誌６３年度ポールで、ボビー・ヴィントン、ジャック・ジョーンズに次いで第３位を占めています。

Ｂ面『責めないで（Don’t Fence Me In）』は１９３４年のミュージカル映画『Don’t Fence Me In』のためにコール・ポーターが作曲したもので、ビング・クロスビーとアンドリュース・シスターズ、ロイ・ロジャーズ盤などがヒットしています。

海外サイト『io9.com』によると、人間の脳が｢共感｣や「感情移入」と「分析」を同時に行うことは、不可能なのだそう。たしかに、いわれてみれば、このふたつを同時に行っている人なんて未だかつて見たことがありません。
これはどうやら、脳が働く部分に由来しているよう。感情的な側面と論理的な側面。これらがまったく異なる場所で起こっているという事実、実感としてなんとなく頷ける気がしますよね。
この事実を証明した、アメリカ・オハイオのCase Western Reserve大学研究者Anthony Jack氏が男女45人を対象に行った実験は、次のようなもの。
被験者の半数に、「自分以外の被験者たちをどのように感じるか」考えてもらい、もう半数には「自分以外の被験者たちを論理的に分析してほしい」と命じました。その際両者の脳をスキャンしてみたところ、活性化した箇所が全く異なることが判明したのです。
