Sandy Carmel – Kiss Me Goodnight(1965/03)
Sandy Posey の無名時代の吹き込み。

After recording a few cover versions of top 40 recordings under various pseudonyms for the Nashville based budget label Hit Records, 20 year old Sandy Posey recorded one more credited as Sandy Carmel. The difference was that the March 1965 release on Bell Records was not actually a’cover’ record. Under the direction of Bill Justis, Sandy recorded the Bill Cates tune,’Kiss Me Goodnight’ which had been issued three months prior in December 1964 by the Chet Atkins produced, Student Nurses on RCA Victor. That version wasn’t a hit and although Sandy’s version was more commercial and polished, her single didn’t fare any better. Her fortune would change when she took a position as a receptionist for producer, Chips Moman at his American Sound Studio in Memphis. As the story goes, she had made a demo recording of the Martha Sharp tune,’Born a Woman’ which Moman heard and was floored by. He promptly secured a deal with M~G~M Records for Sandy and began producing her recordings at his studio.’Born A Woman’ became a big hit followed by’Single Girl’ and’I Take It Back’. Sandy recalled that her success happened so fast that she wasn’t prepared for the stage performances, appearances, television and traveling. She was happy just working in the studio. She continued to record with M~G~M and then signing with Columbia in 1971. After one single for Monument in 1976, she went to Warner Bros. until 1979 and only one release for Audiograph Records in 1983.

Student Nurses – Kiss Me Goodnight(1964/12)
Fools Rush In~あの時君は若かった が連想した。
Composer: Bill Cates
Producer: Chet Atkins
A・B両面ともラストに拍手が入るが、これはライブ風にするためにダビングされたものだそうだ。

Recorded in Nashville at RCA Victor’s Studio -‘B’, this Chet Atkins produced disc issued in December 1964 is one of the many sessions which he had his hand in throughout the 1960’s. Composed by Bill Cates, the plug-side entitled’Kiss Me Goodnight’, would be re-recorded with a more commercially slick production and issued again in March 1965 by Sandy Posey credited as Sandy Carmel for Bell Records under the direction of Bill Justis. The flip-side entitled,’Simply’, is another Bill Cates composition and comes off as very much like more of the same of side A. With a sparse arrangement made somewhat on the cheap, both sides are still indeed youthful and harmonic pop tunes. The voices of what has been documented as twenty-three female singers credited as the’Student Nurses’ were sadly not given any promotion or any photographs to speak of, nor of how this project even came to be. Lastly, for some reason, the annoying audio effect of a fake’live’ audience applauding was dubbed onto the endings of both sides of the record.

Benny Goodman and his Orchestra – Goodnight My Love(1937)version 2
vocal: Frances Hunt

recorded in NYC January 14, 1937
Here is the second of two released Goodman recordings in this 1937 Archive collection of a #1 “Hit Parade” tune from the Shirley Temple film “Stowaway.”
Goodman initially recorded this song with an unbilled vocal by Ella Fitzgerald, but that version was withdrawn from sale when Victor was threatened with legal action by Decca Records, which claimed that the singer was under contract to them (as vocalist with Decca’s Chick Webb band).
This slightly slower-tempo’d replacement version of “Goodnight My Love” was then recorded with the also-unbilled vocal by Frances Hunt and released with the same 78rpm record number as the original. The Ella recording was not officially reissued until the 1960s.
