あのころの遊び仲間よ、いま何処

前々回、引用したThe Playmatesはいささか面妖な三人組です。
メンバーはDonny Conn(1930年生まれ)、Morey Carr(1932年生まれ)、Chic Hetti(1930年生まれ)。
1811年に創立された名門コネチカット大学(University of Connecticut)で出会い、演劇で全米とカナダを回り、1956年ごろから活動を歌へシフト。
1957年、ルーレット・レコードと契約し、1958年のヒット『Jo-Ann』を皮切りに1961年の『Little Miss Stuckup』まで8曲をチャートインさせてます。
演技の経験を生かしてコミカルなムードで歌ってましたが、コーラスを聞くと特段巧いとも思えません。しかも女性グループでいえばコーデッツやマクガイア・シスターズのようにロックンロール以前の古くさいスタイル。時にジャズ風にスイングしたりします。
それでもロックンロールやティーン・ポップスのムードがあるのは、たまたまそういう時代で、レコード会社がそうした楽曲を用意したからなのでしょう。
彼ら自身に例えばトーケンズやカスケーズ程度にも音楽的な志向があったわけではなく、当然のことながら、ビートルズ旋風で宇宙の果てまで吹き飛ばされてしまいました。

The trio’s first national hit reached #19 on Billboard, followed later that year by their best-selling novelty “Beep Beep.”

その後、いろんな国、いろんな時代にThe Playmatesを名乗るグループが誕生しましたが、
その中で60年代を感じさせてくれてるのは、日本のこの「The Playmates」でしょう。

Here is the song hit that probably inspired the title of Kyser’s 1941 film comedy “Playmates,” best-remembered by many as the final screen performance of the faded greatness that was John Barrymore. Note that most LP and CD issues of this Kyser tune have added a heavy layer of unnatural reverb that was not present on the original hit single that you hear in this post.
