The new stage musical “Pal Joey” starred Gene Kelly & Vivienne Segal and began its one-year Broadway run in December 1940. That was bad timing, in a sense, because the one medium most influential in the exposure and promotion of popular songs to the masses–radio–was not permitted to air any of the fresh new Rodgers & Hart tunes from the show due to the 1941 ASCAP ban. Thus, it would take years for songs like “I Could Write A Book” and “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” to become well-known standards, and the few early recordings of them were not big sellers.

“I Could Write A Book”（アイ・クッド・ライト・ア・ブック）はロレンツ＝ハートのコンビがミュージカル『パル・ジョーイ』（1940）のために書き下ろした主題歌。

　民主党は１９日発行の機関誌「プレス民主」の最新号で、「『子ども手当』の存続が決定しました」との記事を掲載した。同党は手当存続を訴える支持者向けのビラを作成したが、自民、公明両党の反発で配布中止を決めたばかり。２０１１年度限りで廃止するとの３党合意をまたも軽視したといえそうだ。

企画の貧困ではあるけれども、結局映画は出来次第。
ただ、『インビジブル』（2000）みたいな、見てて嫌悪感を催す表現だけはしないでほしい。
その点『ミクロの決死圏』は子供でもフツーに見れて良かった。

『ミクロの決死圏』を踏まえた ジョー・ダンテ監督のファミリー向け映画『インナー・スペース』Innner Space（1987）では登場人物が「神様助けて！」という場面で、なんの前振りもなく「 Nam-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo, Nam-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo, Nam-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo ! 」と日本語で祈るという、その当時のカルトの浸透ぶりが話題になってました。

米国はテキサス州サンアントニオに新たにオープンする公共図書館Biblio Techには、紙の本がありません。本がない図書館。ブックレス図書。テキサス州ベア郡全体で予定されている、本無し図書館建設計画の先駆けとして、この秋にオープン予定。紙の本の代わりにあるのは、もちろん電子書籍。自分自身の電子リーダーを持っていなくても、図書館が2週間単位で貸し出ししているので、どんな人でも利用が可能です。図書館内にはもちろんパソコンルームも完備。
学術資料を扱う図書館では、紙の本を用意しないスタイルに鞍替えしているところも多くありますが、サンアントニオの図書館は、スタートから一切紙の本を置かない図書館第１号を目指しています。担当者のNelson wolff氏は、電子リーダーの貸し出しに関しても実に前向き。「ユーザーの名前や住所はわかっています。本を２週間貸し出すのと同じですよ。それに２週間で電子リーダーは電源がきれてしまいます。持っていたって仕方がないでしょう。」と話しています。

このほど米国テキサス州サンアントニオにおきまして、公共図書館としては同国初となる、本のない図書館「BiblioTech」がオープンしました！　本のないというと語弊がありますが、要は紙の本が1冊も置かれていないという意味で、代わりに館内の900台のEブックリーダー、57台のコンピューター、40台のiPad、それにタッチスクリーンが内蔵された机を用いて、1万冊以上のタイトルの電子書籍にアクセス可能となっていますよ。
BiblioTechは、3割以下の住民しかインターネット接続環境がない低所得層地域に設置され、無料でネット利用ができるようにサポートを提供する意味合いも強いそうですが、そのうち、こういう図書館ばかりの世の中になっていったりもするのかもしれませんね。

Good modern fiction is most urgently needed. The books we receive together with new books bought by the government are sorted by experts into field instituted libraries which we want to establish wherever they are needed. 75% of these books are fiction but they also include books on current affairs, reference and encyclopaedia’s and so on. These Libraries have already been set up in Europe and even most isolated units receive books just as they are supplied with rations. We’ve got books to be dropped by parachute, we besieged Malta by submarine. If you happen to go by plane or submarine all you do is to hand over as many books or magazines to your Post Office, it’s not necessary to wrap, stamp or address them and you can be sure that they will reach the services and will they be welcome. 絶版などで入手困難となった資料をパソコンやスマートフォンで閲覧できるようにするサービスを国立国会図書館が５月１９日から始めることになりました。
対象となるのは、国立国会図書館が所蔵し、すでに電子データ化された書籍や雑誌、論文など１５０万点余りです。

事前に利用者登録を済ませたうえで、国立国会図書館のウェブサイトにアクセスすれば、５月１９日以降、個人のパソコンやスマートフォン、それにタブレット端末での閲覧が可能になります。

これらの電子データは、来年１月から印刷もできるようになる予定だということです。

イギリスで本や雑誌、新聞を出版する場合には、その本やコピーを国に提出することが法律で義務づけられています。そのため、イギリスのロンドンに本館を置く国立の図書館である大英図書館には、国内のほぼすべての出版物が所蔵されています。

大英図書館では「印刷物」と呼ぶことができるあらゆるものを収集しているそうです。本や新聞だけではなくチラシ、限られた地方でのみ発行される雑誌、数千ポンド(２０万円以上)するアートブック、子ども向けのおもちゃと一緒に並んでいる小さな本まで、すべてを含んでいます。

約１億７０００万点あるコレクションのうち大半は、イギリス北部にあるウェスト・ヨークシャーに設置された保管庫に所蔵されています。

大英図書館のコレクションの大半は法律に従って送付されるコピーですが、小規模な出版社や、自分が出版元だと想定していない個人のクリエイターなどは、法定の寄贈を行わないことも多くなっています。

大英図書館ではウェブページの保存にも力を入れており、誰かがブログや自身のウェブサイトを作成した際には、大英図書館のウェブアーカイブに保存するよう働きかけています。その量はかなり膨大で、クック氏によると、ファイル数にして１０億以上、約１・５ペタバイトのデータ量に相当するとのこと。
