Johnny Tillotson – If I See You Again(Unreleased)
from the movie “The Fat Spy”(米1966/05/11公開)

(Unreleased 1965 recording) Vocalist, Johnny Tillotson along with Lauree Berger, Jordan Christopher, and Jayne Mansfield provided the musical elements for the wacky, low-budget motion picture,’The Fat Spy’. Hitting the silver screen on May 11, 1966, the music for the film was composed by the trio of Al Kasha, Joel Hirschhom and Hank Hunter along with music by the team of Jordan Christopher and Chuck Alden. The film soundtrack was never commercially released which was quite a shame as there were a couple of fine original standout vocal performances within it. While actress, Lauree Berger may not have been an accomplished singer, her performance of’You Put Me Down (The Nicest Way You Can)’ is prime girl pop heaven that may have been dated by 1965 but probably could have sold a few records if it were issued as a single in 1963 or 1964. What is presented here is a stellar ballad that has a Spectoresque arrangement and would have stood up alongside of the material that the Walker Brothers, the Righteous Brothers and Johnny Rivers were putting out. Somewhere out there may be a surviving reel of recording tape with these songs just waiting to be discovered and digitized for the world to enjoy. One can only hope. Until then, enjoy the lo-fi film audio from the film.

this track is proof positive of just how influential the Supremes and for that matter, the Motown Sound was by the summer of 1965. The’Easy Listening’ market of recorded music cranked out a wonderful collection of the trios popular tunes and as far as orchestral arrangements for rock & roll, soul & pop music go, the LP really is quite good. ‘I’m In Love Again’ was originally recorded by the Supremes in December 1964 and issued as the flipside to the group’s fourth consecutive #1 record,’Stop! In The Name Of Love’ in February 1965. It was also included on their wonderful album,’More Hits By The Supremes’ issued in the summer of 1965.

Linda Scott – If I Love Again(1965)

(unknown vocalist)- Here I Go Again(composer demo recording)(1965)

From the pen of New York based composer, producer and engineer, Ross A.’Tony’ May, this is a demo recording of the tune,’Here I Go Again’. Recorded in early 1965 at New York City’s Bell Sound Studios, it is unknown (for the time being) who the featured female vocal group is on the disc but their performance is indeed quite spectacular to say the least. The only known version of the song found itself as the B-side to a May 1965 release by Gayle Harris on DCP International. That Don Costa produced and arranged version is fine but these ears find the demo version, although somewhat sparse in production, far superior. The office for South Mountain Publishing was also in the same building as Bell Sound and was owned by Don Costa, Teddy Randazzo and Terry Knight. It is speculated that the vocalists on the demo version could possibly have been the Crampton Sisters who issued three singles for DCP International between January and September of 1964. Their next single release was not until one year later in September 1966 on ABC Records, the fantastic and quite collectible,’Hey Boy’, b/w’Baby, Baby’ so this could have been intended as their DCP International swan song release before switching labels. Hopefully the identity of the voices will be known and brought to light in the not so distant future.

Out of New York, this marvelously constructed’Wall Of Sound’ release from the summer of 1964, was the third of surprisingly, only four singles that this Canadian songstress would issue during her brief show biz career. Written by Bob Crewe, Eddie Rambeau and Bud Rehak, the powerful Charles Calello arrangement explodes from the grooves with Shirley singing high above the skull-crunching percussion, deep and dramatic echo and infectious girly backing vocals supplied by Jean Thomas and Mikie Harris.
Born on October 8th, 1942 in Harrow, Ontario, Miss Matthews, like many talented soulful singers, began singing in church and at school. By the time she reached the age of nineteen, she went to Toronto, following her sister Joyce, who was immersed working within the local music scene providing background vocals for visiting vocal groups and soloists at the Bluenote Club. After acquiring stable employment with the Bell Telephone business office in Toronto, Shirley headed over to the Bluenote one night, was asked by the club owner to get up on stage and sing and after being quite impressed with her vocal ability, he hired her as the girl singer for the house band. While still working for the phone company, Shirley continued performing at the club and more often than not, until the wee hours of the morning along side some of the biggest acts in popular music. Recording artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Edwin Starr, The Righteous Brothers and Jackie Wilson were some of the celebrities who would stop by to jam after their Toronto shows.
As the story goes, during one of Shirley’s performances, record producer/song writer, Bob Crewe and Canada’s Red Leaf Records owner, Stan Klees happened to be in the house and the two wasted no time in getting her signed to a recording contract.
In October of 1963, she was whisked over to New York City and recorded’Big Town Boy’ and’You Can Count On That’. The record would be issued in Canada on Tamarac and on Atlantic in the United States. The record went to the Top-10 in Canada and she won a 1964 Juno Award for Female Vocalist Of The Year. In January of 1964, a second single was recorded and issued on Tamarac and Atlantic entitled,’Wise Guys’ b/w’Private Property’. The record made some noise in Canada but went nowhere in the USA.
Her third single issued in the summer of 1964 on Tamarac and Amy was entitled,’(He Makes Me) Feel So Pretty’ b/w’is He Really Mine’ followed by her final single recorded in January of 1965 and released on Red Leaf and Amy entitled,’Stop The Clock’ and’If I Had It All To Do Again’. The latter ultimately becoming a pricey and collectible disc among Northern Soul record collectors.
By 1967, Shirley Matthews had retired from the music business, married and became Shirley Vedder. She has spent most of her adult years living with her family in Unionville, Ontario and was the executive assistant at a racquetball club there and an accomplished player herself.
Shirley Matthews passed away on January 8, 2013 in Toronto.

The Whispers – Never Again(1965/01)

Formed in 1963 in Watts, California, this is the second of a dozen singles issued on the Dore label by the Whispers. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios in December 1964 and issued in early January 1965, the Vince House and Ed Townsend composition of’Never Again’ is as about as sweet, L.A. soul as it gets. The Whispers deliver the harmonic vocals with perfection above the Gene Page arrangement provided by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’. The group left Dore in 1969 and recorded for Soul Clock and Janus Records before making it to true hit status that would come when they signed with Solar Records in 1975. Big hits such as,’And The Beat Goes On’,’It’s A Love Thing’ and’Rock Steady’.

Shani Wallis – All Over Again(UK:1963/04/11、US:1963/06)
シングル “My Heart Cries For You” のB面。

This tune,’All Over Again’, recorded by Shani Wallis, was issued in the United Kingdom and the United States in mid 1963. The English born entertainer began her show business career at the age of four years old and by the age of nineteen, she made her theatrical debut in a London production of’Call Me Madam’. Miss Wallis was making a name for herself in Europe as well as the United States by many television appearances, and recording. Between 1957 and 1968, her records were released over five labels in the United Kingdom; Columbia, Philips. Vivitone, Decca and London. In the United States between 1962 and 1970, her music was issued on Philips, London, and Kapp. The pairing of’My Heart Cries For You’ b/w’All Over Again’ was her only disc issued with Decca in the UK and on London in the USA. The A-side is a pop/teen styled take on the 1950 composition by Percy Faith and Carl Sigman. The flip, presented here is the better side in its jazzy/torchy/night club/loungy feel. Simple musical accompaniment showcases, Shani’s fine vocal performance. Aside from an obvious tape edit on the fine line of lyric, it is a wonderful recording.
Shani achieved silver screen acclaim when she was cast in the role of Nancy in the musical film’Oliver!’ in 1968. She was approached to star in a new television show entitled,’The Brady Bunch’ but declined the offer to continue working in musicals. She became a naturalized citizen and married her agent, Bernie Rich in 1968 until his death in 2016. In 1971, they had one daughter together, Rebecca Rich. Today, Shani Wallis is retired living near her daughter and grandchildren in Southern California

On February 18, 1965 26 year old songstress, Milva, entered an Italian recording studio to record a cover version of the Eddie Williams composition,’Say It Again’. Originally recorded in New York City in 1962 by Ruth Brown and issued as a single on the Philips label, the Milva version had new Italian lyrics by Eugenio Rondinella and Giuseppe Cassia and was issued under the title,’Per Sempre, Per Sempre’. The end result was a lavishly orchestrated arrangement by Enrico Simonetti over which Milva effortlessly supplied her
dramatic vocals with sheer perfection.

Out of New York, this 1962 release is the first of four singles issued by Ruth Brown on the Philips label. An amazing arrangement by Chuck Sagle that brilliantly blends Ruth Brown’ s R&B roots with a mix of classical music and the drama of Broadway with a big Pop sound. Though not enough to propel the disc to hit status, it stands as one of Miss Brown’s finest 1960’s performances.
In 1965, Italian diva, MILVA, recorded her version of the tune entitled,’Per Sempre, Per Sempre’.

4 Cal-Quettes – Again(1962/03)
Hollyridge Strings
シングル “I’ll Never Come Back(Silly Boy)” のB面。

Recorded in February 1962 at the Capitol Tower in Hollywood, this dreamy piece of Girl Group fluff by the 4 Cal-Quettes is probably the best interpretation of the 1949 Lionel Newman and Dorcas Cochran tune,’Again’, that you will ever hear. Shamefully hidden as the flip to, I’ll Never Come Back (Silly Boy)’, the answer song to the Letterman’s hit,’Come Back Silly Girl’, it is the last of their Capitol singles before their final disc of their career was issued the following year on Liberty. Under the production of Steve Venet, Jimmie Haskell’s larger than life string arrangement blends absolutely perfectly with the girls’ beautiful harmonies. Haskell along with Perry Botkin Jr., Stu Phillips and H.B. Barnum created and perfected the lavishly orchestrated string arrangements for the Capitol Records property, the Hollyridge Strings, of which recordings showcasing it began in 1961. Featured alone, with background vocals or accompanying individual artists with the label such as on this 4 Cal-Quets release, the sound of the Hollyridge Strings are impeccable and are all highly recommended and worth seeking out for your listening pleasure.
