In contrast to Jimmie Rodgers’ bright Honeycomb-styled million-seller of 1957, the Weavers took a more relaxed approach to the old Irish folk song “Drimmer’s Cow.” It reached #19 on the best-sellers listings (see also the 1951 Weavers hits “So Long,” “The Roving Kind,” and “On Top Of Old Smoky”).

Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra – A Kiss To Build A Dream On(1951)
vocal: Sandy Evans and Pat O’Connor

Here is a 1935 tune credited to legendary songwriters Oscar Hammerstein II, Bert Kalmar, and Harry Ruby (I have yet to find any recordings of it dating back that far) that finally “arrived” thanks to its effective usage in the 1951 Mickey Rooney film drama “The Strip.” The most popular single discs came from Louis Armstrong (who also performed it in the movie) and Hugo Winterhalter. This Dorsey arrangement was released as the flipside of his also-posted “Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White.”

Louis Armstrong – A Kiss To Build A Dream On(1951)

Mickey drummed up a storm in this crime drama and Satchmo performed the tune, composed in 1935 but deemed eligible for the 1951 Academy Award nomination.
Movie: “The Strip” (MGM), starring Mickey Rooney, Sally Forrest, William Demarest, James Craig, and Louis Armstrong.

More people today will recall the 1965 Mel Carter version, but the song was first a top-10 hit for Karen Chandler in late’52-early’53. She had recorded under the name Eve Young during the 1940s and would marry her conductor Jack Pleis,
