First babies of 2011 in New York: Newborns make debut right after stroke of midnight
Two little Brooklyn girls laid claim Saturday to the title of New York’s First Baby of the Year.
And while the city’s first baby boy – a 7 pound 14 ounce “bobasek” named Kacper Kozlowski – was born 57 seconds after the clock struck 2011, he’s No. 1 to his mom.

Stu Phillips & the Hollyridge Strings – Ooo Baby Baby(1965/03/09)

Out of Los Angeles, talk about an amazingly talented cast of characters, this lavishly orchestrated production is the creation of the genius that is Stu Phillips. In 1964 while working at the west coast office of Colpix Records as the head of Artists & Repetoire, Phillips freelanced as an orchestrator/producer/arranger at Capitol records. His first project was a session with the Four Preps on a tune entitled,’A Letter To The Beatles’. That tune was his inspiration to create an albums worth of instrumental Beatles tunes arranged with a new modern sound. Credited to the’Hollyridge Strings’, the concept was a huge success. By 1965, Phillips had left Colpix and recorded exclusively for Capitol. The popularity of the Hollyridge Strings Beatles collection eventually led to other LP’s that featured the hits of the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, the Four Seasons, Nat’King’ Cole and also a wonderful Christmas album. (Arrangers, Perry Botkin, Jr. as well as Jimmie Haskell also provided orchestral arrangements for supsequent Hollyridge Strings LP’s.)
Recorded in the spring of 1965 and issued in July, the’Feels Like Lovin’ LP showcased the Hollyridge Strings with beautiful vocals by the Ron Hicklin Singers. Although not a big seller, Stu Phillips has said that it was his favorite album while at Capitol.

Deon Jackson – Ooh Baby(1967)

Phyllis Brown – Oh Baby!(1967)

Presented here is the B-side of a rare and highly desired slab of vinyl sought out by collectors of obscure 1960’s Los Angeles Soul. Featuring the voice of sixteen year old Phyllis Brown, the A-side entitled,’Why’ was composed by the young and soulful artist while the flipside,’Oh Baby!’ was composed by Cliff Chambers. Miss Brown was provided with quite a musical education growing up as her father was the founder of Rainbo Records which was housed within the Rainbo pressing plant on North Las Palmas Boulevard in Hollywood. Commencing in 1939, not only 45, 33 and 78 r.p.m. discs were manufactured at the Rainbo pressing facility but also records that were inside of toy dolls, flexi-discs and records on the back of cardboard cereal boxes were made there. By the time Phyllis was a young teen, crates of freshly pressed recordings, most notably, fine R&B specimens were at her fingertips begging to be listened to and absorbed which is exactly what she did. In 1966, Phyllis was booked at a session at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios where the two tracks,’Why’ and’Oh Baby!’ were cut. In a musical style similar to that of the work of Gene Page, Fred Darian and Raul Abeyta, oddly no arranger credit was given on the label of either side but whoever it was, they along with an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ successfully created a double-sided masterpiece that showcased the soulful voice of Phyllis Brown surrounded by the magical reverberation of the Gold Star echo chamber. Pressed in a miniscule run, both yellow and pink colored labels were pasted on 45’s cranked out on the Rainbo label.
The following year, Phyllis along with three other girls formed the group, the Babies and issued a couple of slick L.A. Pop singles on Dunhill that are highly recommended and worth seeking out. Phyllis continued to have a lucrative career recording demos for other songwriters as well as composing and making music as a solo artist and also with Sunny Threatt. In 2018 after a thirty-five year gap in making music, Phyllis continued to share her gift by recording an albums worth of material entitled,’Songs I Haven’t Forgotten’.

Charlie Spivak and his Orchestra – Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral, That’s An Irish Lullaby(1944)

recorded November 17, 1944
Instrumental version of the old Irish lullaby which was resurrected so memorably by Bing Crosby in the 1944 Oscar-winning film “Going My Way.”

Bing Crosby – Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral(That’s An Irish Lullaby)(1944 his original version)
orchestra conducted by John Scott Trotter

Chauncey Olcott sold many copies of this sentimental Irish tune when it was brand new in 1914, and Bing brought it back in 1944 as one of the numbers he performed in his Oscar-winning role as Father O’Malley in “Going My Way.”
Note that the version heard on many 78s, nearly all 45s & LPs, and some CD’s is a slightly different 1945 remake, re-done by Bing because of “mechanical” issues with the 1944 master. This post is the version released on the original 1944 78 single.

Or “That’s An Irish Melody” as shown on the label of this first recording of the classic Irish-American ballad, composed in 1913 by James Royce Shannon for the musical “Shameen Dhu” and sung here by singer-songwriter and Broadway star Olcott. The song would later become closely identified with Bing Crosby from his 1944 on-screen performance in “Going My Way” and subsequent best-selling recording:
