Look Homeward, Angel

This recording of’The Angels Listened In’ was taken from an 8 inch double-sided Gold Star Recording Studios acetate disc with its flipside,’My Love Waits For Me’ and eventually pressed and issued on the Mobile Fidelity label in September 1964 and credited to the Scavengers. As for the Scavengers, other than the few singles they released on the’Stars Of Hollywood’ label prior to this, I know absolutely nothing about them nor do I know anything about the producer of the recordings, Dale K. Nelson. The session for the Scavengers tunes was at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios as was a fantastic previous release on Mobile Fidelity by the Rhythm Masters entitled,’Break – A – Way’. Brad Miller’s then relatively unknown, Mobile Fidelity Records was created with with Jim Connella around 1958 where they initially recorded and issued LP’s of on-location sounds of steam locomotives and the like. Although a few singles aimed at the pop music scene were released in the early 1960’s, it was the combination of lushly orchestrated music mixed with recorded environmental sounds which gave birth to the’Mystic Moods Orchestra’ of which much was also recorded at Gold Star. Brad Miller produced a collection of these LP’s issued on Philips, Warner Bros. and later reissued on his own Songbird Records label that turned the tide for the company. Mobile Fidelity would eventually become the leader in recorded music for audiophiles in the 1970’s-80’s. The company continued on through the transition into digital recording and is currently operating under the name, MoFi Electronics.

Hilton James – I Made An Angel Cry(1965)

Out of Los Angeles, this one gets added to the mountain of unknown obsurities that were recorded within the walls of Hollywood’s legendary, Gold Star Recording Studios. The tune,’I Made An Angel Cry’ was also recorded at the same time in New York by 17 year old, Bruce Scott and issued as his debut single on Mercury Records. Scott’s record would get television exposure on ABC-TV’s,’Shivaree’ but the Hilton James version never made a blip on the pop music radar screen. Producer/ arranger, Rick Jarrard would go on to higher accomplishments as a record producer most notably at RCA Records in Los Angeles working with The Jefferson Airplane, Jose Feliciano and Harry Nilsson.
Rick Jarrard’s success with RCA brought in over 100 million dollars in revenue with such hits as’Somebody To Love’,’White Rabbit’,’Everybody’s Talkin’,’Light My Fire’,’Feliz Navidad’ and’High-Heeled Sneakers’.
Rick is currently vice president of Angelic Music. He has been the recipient of over 30 gold and platinum records and has also received Grammy nominations for’Producer of the Year’.
