人類初の月面着陸に成功したアポロ１１号の乗組員の１人、マイケル・コリンズさんが２８日亡くなりました。９０歳でした。
（中略）
マイケル・コリンズさんは１９５２年にアメリカ陸軍士官学校を卒業後空軍に入隊し、戦闘機のパイロットなどを経て１９６３年に宇宙飛行士に選ばれました。
１９６６年にジェミニ１０号で初めて宇宙を飛行し、２回の宇宙遊泳も行ったコリンズさんは１９６９年、アポロ１１号の乗組員として月に向かいました。
コリンズさんはニール・アームストロング船長とバズ・オルドリン宇宙飛行士が月面への着陸という偉業を達成する中、司令船に１人残って支援にあたっていたことから「歴史上最も孤独だった人」とも呼ばれました。
空軍を退役した後は、国務省の次官補や国立航空宇宙博物館の館長などを歴任しました。
家族によりますと、コリンズさんはがんで闘病中でしたが、２８日、家族にみとられながら亡くなったということです。死因は明らかにされていません。
