皇居の一般参賀で天皇陛下が「少しでもよい年となるよう願ってます」と
年頭のあいさつをなされましたね。
「少しでも」には、今年はどうもひどい一年になりそうですが、との含みがあるように拝されます。
日本も世界も、かつて未経験の領域に足を踏み入れている気がします。
当然、私自身もということになります。
１日午前１０時半頃、東京都立川市富士見町のマンションの一室から、男の声で「妻を包丁で刺して殺した」と１１０番があった。
警視庁立川署員が駆けつけたところ、住人の○○○○さん（７１）がベッドで胸に包丁２本（それぞれ刃渡り約２０センチ）が刺さった状態であおむけに倒れていた。
○○さんは病院に搬送されたが、まもなく死亡した。同署は近くにいた夫の無職、××容疑者（７４）が刺したことを認めたため殺人未遂の疑いで現行犯逮捕。殺人容疑に切り替えて調べている。
発表によると、××容疑者は「以前から鬱憤がたまっていた。些細な原因で逆上して刺した」と話しているという。包丁は自宅にあったもので、自ら通報したという。

単純に「離婚する」という大人の知恵はなかったものか。
仲の悪い夫婦が別れない理由はたいてい世間体かカネでしょう。
イヤな思いをしながら残り少ない人生を浪費する。バカバカしいですなぁ。
山形県警鶴岡署は１日、父親を殴ったなどとして、傷害の疑いで秋田市寺内堂ノ沢、契約社員○○○○容疑者（２４）を逮捕した。父親が搬送先の病院で死亡したことから容疑を傷害致死に切り替えて調べる方針。
逮捕容疑は、１日午前０時ごろ、鶴岡市羽黒町手向の父△△さん（５８）方近くの駐車場で、顔を殴るなどした疑い。
鶴岡署によると、○○容疑者は年末から帰省中で、清志さんから「ちゃんとした仕事に就け」などと生活態度を注意されて口論になった。

無職ではなく契約社員で年末帰省中であった由。今どきは契約社員のクチさえ稀ですから、そうした現状について誤認識があったかもしれません。父親の考える「ちゃんとした仕事」とは、どういう方面だったんでしょう？
１９７０年代にアメリカで hanger-on という表現が流行ったことがあります。寄食者、ヒモ、あるいは腰巾着、子分のことで、「他人の力を頼る、利用する」（≈ 中国語「傍傍族」）というよりは、「完全なる経済的依存」（≈ 日本語「ニート」）の意味合いが強い言葉でした。
記事を読むかぎり容疑者は hanger-on でなかったと思えるんですが、人を撲殺する腕力があるなら、それを活かせる途を親子で考える（！）べきでしたねぇ。
これが hang on となりますと、頑張る、たゆまず行う、完遂するのほかに、引っ掛けられて身動きとれないというイメージから「夢中になる」「首ったけだ」「魅了される」「心を奪われる」という意味になり、アメリカでは１９６０年代後半から７０年代前半にかけて、くだけた言い回しとして何かと使われました。
hang には、絞首刑に処す、絞殺するという、吊るすの延長上のものとしての語意もあります。
わざわざ death by hanging と言わずとも、hang の名詞形 hanging だけで「絞首刑」ですね。
米南部ではリンチ殺人で木に吊るす『奇妙な果実』の歴史的暗黒面が想起されるでしょう。

hang oneself で縊死（いし）、縊首、首つり死。アメリカの自殺のイメージはピストルでこめかみをズドンとやるのが一般的ですが、銃火器は高価ですから尾羽打ち枯らした人間なら飛び降りか「ぶらんこ往生」ということになるでしょう。
それから、口語において Hang は、失望させる、約束を破る、気持をストップさせる、驚きの、とてつもない、等々いろいろなニュアンスで使いまわされてるので、辞書を引いても分からない場合があります。
たとえば、
I’ll be hanged!
を「私は絞首刑にされるよ！」と訳したら、間違いじゃないでしょうけど、意味が違う。
会話で出てくるこのフレーズは、主に
I’m very surprised.
「びっくりしたなぁモウ」
なんですか正月早々縁起でもない話になっちゃいましたが（笑）
これもまぁ経済的混乱の予想されている２０１１年に相応しいんじゃないか。
