There’s No Business Like Show Business

『There’s No Business Like Show Business』は１９４６年のブロードウェイ・ミュージカル『アニーよ銃をとれ（Annie Get Your Gun）』のために書かれた。
ブロードウェイの女王エセル・マーマン（Ethel Merman）がこの歌を歌う時、必ず真正面から、圧倒的声量で、圧倒的に歌うのである。
この歌こそはそのように歌うに相応しい。
いかな名歌手であろうとビング、シナトラのクルーナーや、捻った歌唱しか出来ぬ今風のチャン姐シンガーの出る幕はないのである。
この点、同じ芸道讃歌でも、映画『バンド・ワゴン（The Band Wagon）』の『That’s Entertainment』とは正反対で、こちらは系統としては『映都万華曲（Hollywood Hotel）』の『フーレイ・フォー・ハリウッド（Hooray For Hollywood）』に連なるものだろう。

ミュージカル『アニーよ銃をとれ』は欧米では大当たりを取ったけれども、銃あるいは射撃ということが物語の重要なテーマになってるため、日本人にはいささか馴染みがたい。
私なども、芸人一家のバックステージ物である１９５４年の映画『ショウほど素敵な商売はない（There’s No Business Like Show Business）』のほうがしっくりくる。

私はこの歌を聞くと、なにかこうこみ上げるものがあって涙が出てきてしまう。もし生まれ変わることがあったら今度は舞台人として生きてみたいと、そんなふうに思ったりもする。

Music from the hit Broadway musical “Annie Get Your Gun,” and this was one of a handful of recorded versions of Irving Berlin’s showbiz anthem to be released during the play’s run. None of the 78rpm singles achieved enough popularity to register on any of the Billboard weekly charts, though the original cast album featuring Ethel Merman climbed to #2 on the album rankings.

The 78rpm Original Cast album of music from the Broadway hit “Annie Get Your Gun” rose to #2 on Billboard’s album chart. Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton headlined the stage cast, though it’s only the play’s chorus that sang this Irving Berlin showbiz anthem on the record. Decca also released a single of the song performed by Bing Crosby, Dick Haymes & The Andrews Sisters.
