recorded at the MacGregor & Sollie Studios, San Francisco, June 20, 1933
19 year-old Bob Crosby had apparently served only as band banjoist during the previous Brunswick session but contributed his first recorded vocal for Weeks on this playful tune. His voice quality and style sound not entirely different from that of big brother Bing during his own early years. On the flip side is “Louisville Lady”

The Stardusters – I Don’t See Me In Your Eyes Anymore(1949)
orchestra conducted by Gordon Jenkins

Both the Stardusters-Jenkins and Perry Como versions of this leisurely ballad were moderate springtime ’49 hits. The tune was another product of songwriters Bennie Benjamin and George Weiss, whose credits included “Wheel of Fortune” “Oh! What It Seemed To Be” “Cross Over The Bridge” Can Anyone Explain” “I’ll Never Be Free” “A Girl, A Girl” “Confess” “How Important Can it Be” “Rumors Are Flying” and many more. シングル “Because Of You” のB面。

Though not as recognizable today as some of the other hits from Tony’s breakthrough year of 1951, this “Because Of You” flipside did spend four months on the Billboard singles charts, peaking at #12 on the juke box listings. See also “Because Of You” “Cold Cold Heart” “Blue Velvet” and “Solitaire.”

The Zeniths – No More(1965/02)
スタジオ・ミュージシャンによる演奏で、グループ名は架空のものだそうだ。

In the 1960’s, a common practice for record producers within the Hollywood music scene was to assemble a group of musicians and session singers, record a track, create a fictitious group name , press some 45’s, distribute them and hope for a hit. This disc issued in March 1965 on the Capitol label is no exception. In an attempt to cash in on the 1964 hit musical,’Golden Boy’, producer David Axelrod and arranger H.B. Barnum created this rhythmic double-sider with the help of L.A’s’Wrecking Crew’ and a group of pitch-perfect female background vocalists crediting the project as the ZENITHS. The record didn’t chart but it wouldn’t stop Barnum from compiling a nicely orchestrated Capitol LP (#ST-2278) with tunes from the stage production.

Jackie Edwards – I Am In Love With You No More(UK:1965/04/18)

Ruby and The Romantics – Your Baby Doesn’t Love You Anymore(1965/05 promo version)

This vocal group which hailed from Akron, Ohio goes down in the music history books as having maintained all original members in the lineup from their first recording to their last in the years between 1962 and 1971. Fronted by the lovely voice of Ruby Nash Garnett, the group splashed onto the music scene with their Kapp Records worldwide smash,’Our Day Will Come’. They followed it up with an interesting mix of classy recordings that varied in style from a Bossa Nova affair to a’Wall of Sound’ epic as what is presented here. Composed by Larry Weiss, the Tom Catalano production with the lavish arrangement by Alan Lorber failed to garner the group a sizeable hit. Quite shameful as it truly is one of the groups finer recordings. Interesting that the arrangement on the promotional version had a different intro as opposed to the stock copies and later LP versions which omitted the into and had the tune somewhat abruptly starting at mid chorus without any sort of intro or build up. (The song would attain loftier success as the final studio recording single by the Carpenters in1984.) Ruby and The Romantics moved from Kapp to ABC Records in 1967 for three singles and then to A&M Records for one release in 1969,’Hurting Each Other’. A fine recording which had been previously issued first by Jimmy Clanton and then by Ruth Lewis, once again, not a hit for Ruby & Company but scooped up by the Carpenters who took it to hit status in 1971. The final recording session for the group was held at the legendary, Sigma Sound Studio in Philadelphia arranged by Thom Bell and produced by Steve Feldman and Joey Levine. Three stellar tracks were recorded and planned for released with M~G~M Records but those discs sadly, never appeared. In 1971, the group called it splitsville and Ruby headed back to Ohio and as of 2021, Ruby is now the only surviving member of the group.

Artie Stevens – You Don’t Love Me Anymore(1965/07)
シングル “Walk On With Him” のB面。

This disc from July 1965 is apparently the only thing that unknown male vocalist, Artie Stevens, has on his resume. A lot of talent however, went into the making of the double-sider which was born within the walls of Hollywood’s United Recording featuring an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ playing the backing tracks.. Composed by Chuck Sedacca who would sadly perish along with his wife and two young children in a car accident on a Los Angeles freeway just two years later, the A-side showcases the Artie Stevens version of’You Don’t Love Me Anymore’ which to date, seems to be the only known recorded example of it. It’s a beautiful ballad that tells of the familiar story of love lost on which Artie is joined by the Blossoms who provide sweet background vocals to the track. Produced by Norm Ratner with Tommy Oliver writing out the arrangement, the flipside entitled,’Walk On With Him’ had already been through the motions with Oliver as producer and arranger on a version for Denny Provisor in May 1964 which was also issued on 20th Century-Fox.

Out of Los Angeles, the first of two singles on Titan Records with the involvement of Al Rosenberg and Bert Kronfeld. The second being’Slings And Arrows’ by the Wooly Ones also in 1965. According to Rosenberg, the Vistas were a group that appeared regularly at the’Pacific Ocean Park’ in Santa Monica, California. In January 1965, the group went into Gold Star Recording Studios in Hollywood with Larry Levine at the controls and recorded this obscure single. The’Be My Baby’ drum riff gets a nice recylcling with an east coast, male vocal group sound.

The Popsicles – I Don’t Want To Be Your Baby Anymore(1965)

Two People – We Don’t Do That Anymore(1966/07)
シングル “Love Isn’t Tears Only” のB面。

Recorded at United Recording in Hollywood in June 1966, this is the fourth of five singles issued between August 1965 and September 1966 by this elusive male/female vocal duo named simply, TWO PEOPLE (The first three discs were credited to’Two People’ while the fourth and fifth were credited to’The Two People’). The flip side to’Love Isn’t Tears Only’, this Scott Turner and Steve Stone tune entitled,’We Don’t Do That Anymore’ is very much in the style of the Righteous Brothers. Coincidentally, the A-side which was composed by Wayne Wadhams, Don Askew and Kevin Gavin who were involved within the workings of the vocal group, the Fifth Estate (formerly the “D” Men), originally intended it as a possible single for the Righteous Brothers. In fact, a magnificent demo recording was made featuring the voice of Kenny Karen singing over an impressive’Wall of Sound’ backing track. The Righteous Brothers passed on the song but it evidently it made its way to Liberty Records where it would find its way to’Two People’ to record. A record that the DJ’s could have easily played either side as they both are top quality, heavily orchestrated pop anthems worth much more than their unfortunate destiny to languish in unheard obscurity. Considering that’Two People’ would ultimately release five singles with a major record label one would think that more information could be found regarding the personnel but not in this instance. The male voice is that of a talented fellow by the name of Pat Briley who composed three of the groups recordings and whose only known other recording was a lone solo single on the Whiz label in 1967. The identity of the female voice is somewhat of a mystery. Her voice has been credited on several sites as a young black vocalist by the name of Rita Martinson aka Helene Slack. Rita may have been credited as the composer on the A-side of the groups final Liberty single but the curious conflicting fact is that on the December 1965 performance of Two People on TV’s,’Shivaree’, the female half of the duo was a blonde white female, similar in appearance to Mamas & the Papas singer, Michelle Phillips. The question is, was the white female singer the true voice on the recordings or was she hired to simply lip synch to Rita Martinson’s vocal for the televised performance? Or, was Rita the vocalist on at least one of the groups recordings. Hopefully this discrepancy will be rectified in the not so distant future and the musical history of the Liberty Records flash in the pan vocal duo, TWO PEOPLE, will be brought to light.

Following Charlie’s major career leap in 1973, RCA Victor repackaged (on LP and 45) a number of the tracks that he had recorded for their labels in the mid-1960s. This 1964 Chet Atkins production was the most successful of those’70s reissues. And if you’ve never heard it, give a listen now to the quite-different bluesy treatment of the song which he had made even earlier while recording with Sam Phillips at Sun
