Buddy Arden – Saying Goodbyes(1969/04)

Recorded at New York City’s, Mirasound Studios in March 1969, this powerful and lavishly orchestrated recording is yet another of those discs that has shamefully been allowed to languish in obscurity. Composed by George Devens and Larry Weiss,’Saying Goodbyes’ is the third of five known singles issued by unknown vocalist, Buddy Arden.
In August 2005, co-composer, Larry Weiss recalled the session for’Saying Goodbyes by stating that friends in the control booth were Roy Glover, Tom Catalano and Clause Ogerman who really loved the song. They finally got all the kinks straight in the various parts of the very involved Artie Butler arrangement, which was played by a full orchestra. The studio was wall to wall with musicians: rhythm section, strings & horns, harp, percussion, you name. They finally ran the song down with the singer and at songs end, there was not a dry eye in the place. The arrangement was so beautiful that the orchestra stood up and applauded the arranger after the run down. Larry’s recollection is quite descriptive and spot on.
Curiously, the musical composition for’Saying Goodbyes’ was listed by copyright in 1966 yet the only known recorded versions of the song are Buddy’s 1969 version three years later and a 1971 LP cut by John Rowles.
The flipside to Buddy’s Dot Records single is a quasi-Spector arranged track entitled,’You’re The First One’ which is quite a nice pop production that although it didn’t transpire, it gave this release an opportunity to become a double sided hit as well as giving quite a musical bargain for the record buying public.
The passing of over 50 years since this was recorded has not made it any easier to find out just who Buddy Arden was as there are no photos to be found. Possessing an impressive tenor voice that deserved to have a wider range of exposure, at least with the handful of recordings that he made all of those years ago, he has managed to leave a footnote of significance in the history of American east coast productions of the 1960’s.

Rome Singleton – Joanie Goodbye(1965/06)

An early summer session at Hollywood’s legendary Gold Star Recording Studios gave birth to the second of only two known singles issued by unknown vocalist, Rome Singleton. His first disc, which was also recorded at Gold Star in January 1964, was a beautiful Fred Darian production entitled,’Another Show, Another Town’ b/w’Broadway Broken Heart’. On that disc, Singleton’s vocal delivery was so similar to that of Fred Darian, it was incorrectly thought to actually be the voice of the producer. For this sparsely arranged but dramatically atmospheric production on the Dot label, Rome Singleton’s performance is similar to that of crooner, Johnny Mathis. With minimal instrumentation and a distant, harmonic female background vocal group,’Joanie Goodbye’ came and went without notice. Today, very rarely does a copy of either of Rome Singleton’s records ever surface.

Carol Mazzariello & Vince Castro – Goodbye Chris(1963, Unreleased Laurie Records)
キャロル・マッザリエロとヴィンス・カストロ
♪ ダーンダン、ビルビ……ダンルビダン、ウォーウォー

Recorded in the basement studios of one of the most iconic office buildings in American Pop music at 1650 Broadway in New York. Built in 1922, the thirteen-story building housed record companies and music publishers that joined forces with the same clientele that occupied the 1931 built, Brill Building across the street at 1619 Broadway. Combined, the army of songwriters, musicians, producers, arrangers, music publishers and record companies within those two buildings created an untold wealth of historic music. Presented here is the only known version of a tune entitled, Goodbye Chris’ composed and performed in 1963 by Caroll Mazzariello and Vince Castro. It has been documented that the session was funded by Laurie Records which ultimately never used the song as no known official recording of it have come to light. Although sparsely arranged, the voices in top form featuring an impressive lead female voice with harmonic male double tracked backing vocals. In the six decades since it was recorded, only two known 10-inch acetate discs of the demo recording have surfaced and sold at on-line auction sites. Finally, here is the complete and unedited cut with images of the original composer/publisher lead sheet. The tune was given a copyright in 1963 but was curiously listed with a February 1964 date in the catalog. No information is to be found regarding the female vocalist; however, Mr. Castro is still out there living in Bronx, New York. Hopefully, he may be able to shed some light on the origins and creation of this long-lost teen/pop demo recording out of New York City in late 1963.

Harry and The Keyavas – If This Is Goodbye(1963/12)

Who would have ever thought that at a recording session at Bell Sound Studios in New York City in November 1963, this epic two-minute soul obscurity would go on to be one of the many now sought after possessions among record collectors. ‘If This Is Goodbye’ features the emotively raspy lead vocal of Harrison William Pennington who has a style that is a mix of Sam Cooke and Johnnie Mae Matthews. He scales the deliciously orchestrated backing track provided by Robert Banks with an impressive delivery that in the end, when the records were pressed and released, was sadly robbed of a qualified hit. He did go on to record as ‘Harry Starr for one single in 1966 for the End label which is also quite nice and equally collectible.

With this 1922 song being featured in the current film “Jolson Sings Again,” two very different recorded versions made appearances on Billboard’s popularity charts during the autumn of ’49. There was Art Mooney’s happy sing-along version https://youtu.be/RsEEwwdWiys and this manic Jolson parody perpetrated by the ‘Looney’ Mel Blanc and his co-conspiring arranger-conductor Billy May.

Art Mooney and his Orchestra – Toot, Toot, Tootsie(Good-Bye)(1949)
vocal: The Art Mooney Choir

Following the success of the 1946 film “The Jolson Story,” with Larry Parks’ singing voice dubbed by Al Jolson himself, the iconic showman found his dormant career on a major upswing of radio, record sales and tours. So Columbia Pictures filmed the sequel “Jolson Sings Again,” which explains the label’s movie credit on this top-20 revival of a famous hit from the earlier Al Jolson years. Mooney’s “Hop-Scotch Polka” “Beautiful Eyes” “Twenty-Four Hours Of Sunshine” and “Again” are also included in this 1949 collection.

Al Jolson ‎– Toot, Toot, Tootsie!(Goo’ Bye)(Decca 1947 version)
from the album “The World’s Greatest Entertainer”(Decca 1959)
orchestra conducted by Morris Stoloff

recorded June 9, 1947
This was among the vintage Jolson standards which he re-recorded for the Decca label during the 1940s. Al’s unprecedented showbiz comeback, fueled by the 1946 movie “The Jolson Story” in which he lip-synched the songs for lead actor Larry Parks, resulted in four top-selling 78rpm albums for Decca between 1946 and 1949 (three reached #1, the other peaked at #2). For Al’s original lo-fi 1922 version of this song

Perry Como – Goodbye, Sue(1943)
with Mixed Chorus

(a cappella)
recorded in NYC June 20, 1943
This wartime lyric was Como’s very first record release as a solo artist following his departure from the Ted Weems band.
Due to the 1942-44 strike against the record industry (aka “The Recording Ban”) by the American Federation of Musicians, no musical instruments could be utilized in the production of new commercial recordings by those companies which had not yet settled with the union, which included Victor at the time of this recording. Thus, only a vocal group is heard accompanying Perry.
