労働力不足に悩むリンゴ農家の間で、色づきの管理が大変な赤リンゴから、手間がかからない黄色リンゴに植え替える動きが広がっている。ナシと間違えられるなど、国内の需要拡大への課題は多いが、海外では強い甘みや珍しさに人気が集まりつつある。

１年間のほとんどを果樹の手入れに費やすリンゴ農家にとって、特に重労働なのが「着色管理」。日光に当たると現れる色素が赤色を演出するため、一つひとつのリンゴにむらなく日を当てる必要がある。
収穫約１カ月前から、日陰にならないよう周りの葉を取ったり、日の当たる面が逆になるよう実を裏返したりする作業に追われる。特に大変なのが、底まで赤くするために果樹の下の地面に反射シートを敷きつめる作業。

だが、黄色品種でこうした作業はほとんど不要だ。青森県内では高齢化と後継者不足で、農業全体の労働力はこの２０年間でほぼ半減。少しでも省力化しようと、赤リンゴの木が寿命を迎えると、黄色品種に植え替える農家が増えている。
