So in Love

1948年12月初演のミュージカル『キス・ミー・ケイト』。
シェイクスピア喜劇『じゃじゃ馬ならし』に出ることになった、元夫婦の話。

ミュージカルでは、歌が筋の進行にどれだけ関わってるかで、ドラマの濃淡が決まってきます。これは時間的制約でもあるわけで、そのため容易に想像のつく結末となるのが普通です。興味の対象は「どうそこへたどり着くか」とか、演技はどうか、曲は良いか、歌唱はどうか、といったことになるわけです。
さらに劇中劇が入る構成ですと、そこに時間が取られるため、人物関係や行動の必然性が分かりにくくなるというリスクが出てきます。

『キス・ミー・ケイト』の場合は、同じ舞台を務めることになった、別れたばかりの役者夫婦が主人公。はたして焼け木杭に火がつくのか、それともそれぞれ新しい恋人と結ばれて、二倍のハッピーエンドを迎えるのか、それは見てのお楽しみですね。

その『キス・ミー・ケイト』のナンバー『ソー・イン・ラブ』は日本では『日曜洋画劇場』のエンディング・テーマとしても知られていました。
『シャレード』とか『雨の訪問者』のサントラを最初に聞いたとき、どこかしらこの曲の雰囲気が感じられたような記憶があります。

Gordon MacRae – So In Love（1949 his original version）

This performance of the Cole Porter beguine from “Kiss Me Kate” was a top-20 best-seller for MacRae. The play starred Alfred Drake & Patricia Morison and was Porter’s most successful stage musical, running for 1077 performances and winning five Tony awards, including Best Musical.
Note: It was MacRae’s differently-arranged 1957 remake of “So In Love” that has mistakenly been included in more than one “greatest hits” CD compilation. This post is the correct 1949 release.
