さて、こうしたヒット曲が60年代の気分を表現してることは確かなんですが、そうでないタイプの、非常に60年代的な、いや60年代そのものと言ってよい歌い手、楽曲も多数あります。
一例を挙げるとすれば、こんな人たちの、こんな歌はまさにそのものずばりでしょう。

 トールキンは、前のバーで演奏していたバンドごと、この場所に移ってきた。詩人でありミュージシャンでもある連中で結成されたそのパンドの名前は、「ザ・ファグス(The Fugs)」。チューリ・クプフェルバーグ、エド・サンダース、ケン・ウィーバーの3人からなる(本書にすでに何度か名前が現れている、あの)パンドだ。ザ・ファグスは、革新的なロック・バンドであり、ユーモアたっぷり、笑えるわいせつ性と言ったものを持ったコミック・バンドでもあり、常に不遜な態度で社会的・政治的なメッ七ージを痛烈に繰り出すというまったく新しいタイプのバンドだった。今にして思えば、このザ・ファグスこそ、マザーズ・オブ・インヴェンション(The Mothers of Invention=フランク・ザッパ率いた伝説のバンド)はじめ、数々の革新的なグループやミュージシャンたちの、「生みの親」「源」だったのだ。数々の下品で耳障りな唄を彼らは生み出した。
