Richard Bowers, a US Army GI stationed in the Far East during 1952, took part in a Tokyo recording session and sang this tune, the title of which translates from Japanese into English as “Forgive Me” or “I’m Sorry.” After the record became popular in Japan, Columbia Records obtained distribution rights for the US and created a label showing the artist name as “Columbia Tokyo Orch.” Harry Belafonte and Eddy Howard quickly rushed out versions of their own, but it was this original that won out, reaching the Cash Box magazine top ten in the spring of 1953.

弦楽合奏曲「広島の犠牲者に捧げる哀歌」の作曲や数々の映画音楽を手がけたことで知られるポーランドの音楽家、クシシュトフ・ペンデレツキさんが亡くなりました。８６歳でした。
ポーランド南部、デンビツァ出身のペンデレツキさんは、幼いころから音楽教育を受け、大学で作曲を学んだ後、作曲家や指揮者として活躍しました。
特に１９６０年に作曲した弦楽合奏の作品、「広島の犠牲者に捧げる哀歌」で注目を集め、腕でピアノの鍵盤を押さえて不協和音を作り出す、前衛的な音楽手法で知られています。
またアメリカのホラー映画、「エクソシスト」や「シャイニング」などの音楽も手がけ、グラミー賞を４度にわたって受賞したほか、２００４年には、高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞を受賞しました。
地元メディアなどによりますと、ペンデレツキさんは長い間、闘病生活を送っていて、２９日、ポーランドのクラクフにある自宅で亡くなったということです。

前出スパイク・ジョーンズの『ジャパニーズ・スコキアーン』の主人公である日本人名がなぜ「スコキモト」なのか。
その可能性の一つとして、１９３０年代後半に人気となった映画のキャラクターで日本人国際スパイ「ミスター・モト」の存在があったのかもしれません。つまり「スコーキアン＋モト」で「スコキモト」。
私は大いに有り得ると思ってます。

２つのテイクの異同は未確認。

In the over 40 year history of A&M Records （the Herb Albert and Jerry Moss owned label） the top artists associated with the company are of course, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass along with the Carpenters. But in the hundreds of single releases since the inception of the label in 1962 until the releases dwindled down in the 2010’s, there are quite a few obscurities and one off, odd ball and now, collectible discs in the lot. Case in point is this October 1964 release by’Wrecking Crew’ keyboardist, Al De Lory. A really wonderful but brief in duration is the Herb Alpert and Scott Turner A-side tune,’The Moon Racers’. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios in September 1964, the arrangement and overall production is smack-dab in the middle of the similar lush and percussive mid 1960’s instrumental recordings by legendary arranger, Jack Nitzsche on Reprise Records. L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ do not disappoint on delivering the musical goods along with an uncredited male/female vocal group hidden down in the mix. It’s somewhat of a Surf meets James Bond meets Phil Spector affair. Quite nice and unfortunately, one of the A&M singles that were pressed in a minute quantity and obviously not promoted. The B-side,’Made In Japan’ is shorter in duration than the plug side and is an Al De Lory original. His piano is out in the forefront with a dose of echo enveloping the horns and drums and Al’s tinkling of the ivories. You’ve struck gold if you happen to encounter an original copy but if the US version doesn’t come along there is also a rare Australian issued single on the Festival label that can fit the bill. Happy hunting.
