Though it never achieved the status of his “Sleigh Ride” “Blue Tango” or “The Syncopated Clock,” this orchestral novelty was among Leroy Anderson’s more memorable compositions…long a performance favorite in ‘pops concert’ venues. His also-commonly-available stereo remake of “The Typewriter” was recorded in 1959.

Though not anywhere near the top of lists which rank the “classic” Warner Brothers musicals of the 1930s, “Ready, Willing and Able”(1937) did a great job of showcasing one of Johnny Mercer’s finest lyrics, including a song & dance on a giant typewriter set piece (film clip available on YouTube). Jimmy Brierly is vocalist on this pleasant Reisman arrangement, though it was Bing Crosby’s recorded version with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra that purportedly outsold all the rest

Phil Harris and his Orchestra – Too Marvelous For Words(1937)

Posting this swinger for anyone who associates Phil only with his comic radio persona and later novelty recordings. Out of Los Angeles, the October 1961 session at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios appears to be the only known disc issued by this songstress credited as Suzanne Clark. She did go on to record as Suzie Clark on Rendezvous Records in 1962 and as Suzy Clark on Crusader Records in 1965. Apparently the Johnny Cole composition was the work of the uncredited combination of Joseph Van Winkle, Al deLory and Fred Darian under their JAFCO PRODUCTION banner.

By the time this single was released in June 1965, Miss Diane Renay had already amassed eight singles over three different labels and also had an excellent long play album. With exception to the first release in October 1962, her recordings were produced by the legendary, Bob Crewe. Her tenure at 20th Century-Fox garnered several charting singles with two of them,’Navy Blue’ and’Kiss Me Sailer’ selling a nice quantity of records. In late 1964, Bob Crewe formed his own record label, Dyno Voice (the first three discs were Dyno Vox). A few months later, the sister label was christened New Voice, and Diane Renay was featured on the debut single.’The Company You Keep’ b/w’Words’ was quality girl pop material with top notch arrangements by Chales Calello, but it got lost in the musical shuffle and did not chart.’Words’, which is presented here, would make another appearance one year later on New Voice 813 in June 1966. Once again it was the B-side, this time under the 1964 recording of Diane’s recording the Shirelle’s hit,’Soldier Boy’. To date only a few promo copies of that pressing have surfaced making it Miss Renay’s most rare single release.

Mama Cass belts out the lead in the group’s fourth of their six top-5 hit singles. Compared to the LP version, the single release deleted a short non-vocal phrase from the middle and was a much’hotter’ sounding mix, augmented with additional overdubbed instrumentation.
