Orchestra and Chorus Conducted By Bernie Wayne – Zsa-Zsa(1953)

In addition to writing or collaborating on such well-known vocal compositions as There She Is Miss America, Blue Velvet, and Laughing On The Outside, many of the tunes that Bernie Wayne penned were lush, bright, pizzicato-laden instrumentals such as “Port Au Prince” and “Tropicana.” Sometimes he would title them after the names of real women, notably the Hugo Winterhalter hit “Vanessa” (for actress Vanessa Brown) and this one for Ms. Gabor.

シングル “My Love-My Love” のB面。

Leroy Anderson – Plink, Plank, Plunk(1952)

Leroy Anderson and his “Pops” Concert Orchestra – Jazz Pizzicato / Jazz Legato(1950)

recorded September 11, 1950
“Jazz Pizzicato” was the first of Leroy Anderson’s light orchestral compositions to achieve favor in the 1930s. The brief 1938 work was later-on combined with Anderson’s contrasting “Jazz Legato” to create a more-lengthy piece, which was first recorded by Arthur Fiedler’s Boston Pops Orchest

Roberto Ledesma – Corazón en Cristal

Ambrose and his Orchestra – Jazz Pizzicato(1948)
(instrumental)

recorded 1948
The Ambrose band approaches here what was commonly known as “light music” in 1940s-50s England. Both this and the also-posted flipside “Jazz Legato” get full-length treatments, though Leroy Anderson had composed them in the late 1930s for the Boston Pops as shorter pieces that are usually combined and performed as a single circa-three-minute entity.

David Rose and his Orchestra – Holiday For Strings(1944)
recorded in 1942

Conductor-composer-arranger Rose was married to Judy Garland during the time this instrumental standard was sitting at #2 on the best-sellers chart. Recorded and first released in 1942, “Holiday For Strings” didn’t rise to wide popularity until 1944 while the musicians union remained on strike against Victor (aka the “Recording Ban”). The flip side was “Our Waltz”:

Here is “Jazz Pizzicato,” the first of Leroy Anderson’s light orchestral compositions to achieve favor in the 1930s and the first to be included on a commercial record release. The brief 1938 work was later on combined with Anderson’s contrasting “Jazz Legato” to create a more-lengthy piece. Unlike this original Pops version, Anderson’s own 1950 and 1960 recordings rearranged the order of tunes with “Legato” following “Pizzicato.”

Horace Heidt and His Musical Knights – Pizzicati Polka(1939)

recorded in NYC March 23, 1939
Swingin’ the classics (as some bands were wont to do during that era), this is a treatment of Léo Delibes: the “Divertissement: Pizzicati” from Act 3 of the ballet Sylvia (1876). The piano break is performed by Lou Busch–later sometimes billed as Joe “Fingers” Carr–who would be replaced in Heidt’s band that July by Frankie Carle. For the flip side “Beer Barrel Polka,”

Fred Waring & The Pennsylvanians – Hora Staccato
