Servaas – Sundown（1967）
シングル “I’ll Keep Pretending” のＢ面。

Out of New York, this disc appears to be the second of only two known singles by the curiously named,’Servaas’. Recorded at Mirasound Studios in the summer of 1967, the session was packed with musicians playing a quazi’Wall of Sound’ arrangement by Herb Bernstein. The lead vocals are sheer perfection with lovely background vocals supplied by Peggy Santiglia, Bernadette Carroll and Denise Ferri. This fellow’s other single issued in 1965 on the Tech-Sound label is equally as explosive and on both sides to boot. The quality of his recordings deserved better than to languish in obscurity.

Pat Galo – Sundown（1966/05）

Out of New York, an epic, slick Herb Bernstein arranged pop number by New Jersey lounge crooner, Pat Galo with backing vocals by Denise Ferri, Peggy Santiglia and Bernadette Carroll. The tune would be issued one year later on the Lynde label utilizing the same backing track and background vocals with lead vocals by the elusive, Servaas. Galo was a fine singer but in comparison with the Servaas version, the later is really a much better record. Composed by Bob Gaudio and Sandy Linzer, the flipside,’Out Of The Crowd’ has a sound very much in the style of a Bob Crewe, Four Seasons production. It’s no wonder when reading the label credits as most of those listed worked along side Crewe at one time or another. This version had hand claps which were edited out for a 1968 reissue on the tiny, Shelby Singleton affiliated, Embassy Records label. Neither issue of’Out Of The Crowd’ appeared to have seen the light of day. Quite a shame since it is an excellent example of the mid 1960’s, east coast pop sound.
Not only was Pat a great vocalist but he could also play a mean trumpet and flugelhorn. After joining several bands in high school, Pat later formed a five piece band called the Hi-Lads. The group utilized synchronized dance moves, comedy routines, and did impressions. So successful was the band that the Hi-Lads earned the honor of’Las Vegas Lounge Act Of The Year’ several times. The group, and Pat as a solo artist, signed recording contracts with Columbia, Epic, RCA, and Charlie Parker records.

Note in this original single release: at the 1:09 point Williams sings “in the same and sweet old way” and at 2:00 he sings （the correct original lyric） “in the sweet and same old way.” Over the years for LP and CD reissues, the （1:09） “same and sweet” was replaced by a copy of the （2:00） “sweet and same” audio.

When songwriter-producer-talent manager Buck Ram began overseeing the career of The Platters during the 1950s, he consistently provided them with his own compositions to record, both the new （”Only You,” “The Great Pretender,” “The Magic Touch,” etc.） and the old, including “Twilight Time”. Ram’s lyrics for the 1944 Three Suns instrumental hit had first been recorded in this Jimmy Dorsey release.

Introduced and popularized by The Three Suns （and revived in 1958 by The Platters）, “Twilight Time” was issued on the flipside of the famous Les Brown-Doris Day 78 of “Sentimental Journey.”

Though it was the Suns’ similar-sounding 1947 re-make for RCA Victor that was most commonly heard through the decades, this first version of their famous theme, issued on Eli Oberstein’s HIT label, is how it sounded during its initial run in 1944-45. The flipside “How Many Hearts Have You Broken” was also quite popular in its time and is included in the collection.

The Four Graduates – A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening（1963/04）

Forming in 1961, this quartet out of Patterson, New Jersey became proficient in singing various harmonized styles of music which led them from playing clubs to recording background sessions for others in New York City. After working with Bob Crewe, they hooked up with Lor Crane and signed with the Laurie Records subsidiary, Rust Records in February 1963, for a two single deal. Fist out of the chute in April 1963 was this wonderful working of the 1944 Ink Spots hit,’A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening’. The Tokens who were producing for various acts at Laurie, started their own label, B.T. Puppy and enticed the group to sign with them a couple of years later. Changing their name to the HAPPENINGS, a new batch of hit records were about to be born. Most notably,’I Got Rhythm’,’Go Away Little Girl’ and’See You In September’.

This and the also-posted ballad “I Couldn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night” were sung by Sinatra in the RKO film “Higher And Higher.” Another song from the movie was “The Music Stopped,” which is included via the Woody Herman version.

Fully-produced broadcast arrangement of a Sinatra hit that he also recorded commercially that year, but with only a cappella vocal accompaniment （due to the musicians union strike against the record companies）. This and the also-posted ballad “I Couldn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night” were sung by Frankie in the RKO film “Higher And Higher” and are both also available on this channel in their’Recording Ban’ versions, included in the 1944 HITS ARCHIVE collection.
