Savannah Churchill -(It’s No)Sin(1951/09)

With the Eddy Howard and Four Aces versions leading the way, RCA Victor’s attempt at “Sin” showcased vocalist Savannah Churchill, well-known for a number of 1940s recordings that had sold primarily within the R&B market. Her version of this 1951 ballad peaked at #9 on both the pop best-sellers and juke box charts.

Eddy Howard and his Orchestra – Sin(It’s No Sin)(1951/09)

Though the song tends today to be more closely identified with its originators the Four Aces, it was this more fully-produced version by a then-more-familiar artist that was the more successful record in 1951. Eddy’s “Sin” reached #1 on Billboard’s sales, juke box, and (for 8 weeks) radio airplay charts.
Like the Aces original on the Victoria label, the Howard version was first released with the song title shown simply as “Sin,” but before long most issues of the tune were changed to “(It’s No) Sin” or “Sin (It’s No Sin).” See also the Savannah Churchill recording in this collection.

Four Aces featuring Al Alberts – Sin(1951 their original version)
aka “Sin (It’s No Sin)”

Here’s the original small-Philadelphia-label hit that spawned several popular cover versions of the song and kicked off the successful career of Al Alberts’ group The Four Aces (who were immediately snatched up by Decca). This disc peaked at #4 during its 22 weeks on the Billboard singles charts and was, like the Eddy Howard version, originally issued with the song title shown simply as “Sin.” Before long, the song would become known variously as “(It’s No) Sin” or “Sin (It’s No Sin).”
