欧米人が捕鯨に反対するのは、
旧約聖書ヨナ書や新約聖書マタイ伝に、
ヨナ（Jonah）が神の遣わした巨きな魚（ダーグ・ガードール。欽定訳ではクジラ）に呑み込まれ、三日三晩過ごすうち不信心を反省して吐き出される、
という話があり、それをキリスト復活の予型として理解しているから、
なんてことをよく耳にします。
しかもそのエピソードはギリシア・ローマのパライモーン神話に起源があって、そこでは巨大な魚（クジラ？）でなくてイルカだったそうです。
イルカに乗った少年といやァ、すぐ『島の女』か『城みちる』かってことにもなりますが、

３月１５日深夜、テレビで『タイムトラベラー きのうから来た恋人』Blast from the Past（米1999/02/12公開）という映画をやってまして、冒頭いきなりペリー・コモ盤の『Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive（アクセンチュエイト・ザ・ポジティヴ）』がかかったんで、クジラに呑み込まれたヨナの話を思い出した次第。

『Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive』は『Hooray for Hollywood』『I’m An Old Cowhand（俺は老いぼれカウボーイ）』と同じくらい好きな歌です。楽天的なヤンキー気質をまんま表現したような歌で、歌詞にヨナのことが出てきます。
典型的な白人好みのスイングでありながら、
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark（クジラの中のヨナ、方舟の中のノア）
のくだりでは、当時の黒人ゴスペルのムードが瞬間的に感じられたりします。
歌自体は時節柄、日米戦争に勝ち抜こうぜというメッセージだったんですけどね。
ちなみにヨナは物事を台無しにする不吉な人物の代名詞ともなっておりますが、『かもめのジョナサン』で有名な男性名ジョナサン（Jonathan）はこのヨナ（英語読みではジョゥナと発音）とは語源的に関係ないそうです。
さて、この『Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive』、今でもアメリカ人に好まれているエバーグリーンというか懐メロというかスタンダードナンバーでして、映画やテレビでよく使われてます。
『ブリンクス』The Brink’s Job（米1978/12/08公開）ではビング・クロスビー、アンドリュー・スシスターズ盤が、
『L.A.コンフィデンシャル』L.A. Confidential（米1997/09/19公開）では、作詞者ジョニー・マーサーが歌った盤が使用され、
『真夜中のサバナ』Midnight In The Garden Of Goodand Evil（米1997/11/21公開）では監督であるクリント・イーストウッド自身が歌ってます（ジョニー・マーサーはジョージア州サバナ生まれ）。

シェイフさんは2月、イワシの群れを撮影するために仲間とともにシュノーケリングをしていた。
イワシの大群を捉えるサメの姿を撮影しようとした次の瞬間、突然目の前が真っ暗になったという。
「体に圧力を感じました。クジラに呑み込まれたんだとすぐにわかりました」と、シェイフさんは動物ニュースサイト「バークロフト・アニマル」に答えた。
呑み込まれた後のことを、シェイフさんはテレグラフ紙にこう語る。
「恐怖感を感じる余裕はありませんでした」
「直感で、息を止めました。クジラがインド洋深くに潜って私を吐き出すかもしれないと思ったので」
アメリカ海洋大気庁によると、ニタリクジラは5～15分、深さ約300メートルまで潜ることができる。
しかし幸運にも、シェイフさんが恐れていた事態は起きなかった。クジラがすぐに口を開けたので、シェイフさんは外に出ることができた。
