１３日（木）午後２時２６分、西オーストラリア州オンズロー（Onslow）で、気温が５０・７度まで上がりました。これは１９６０年１月２日に南オーストラリア州で観測された５０・７度と並び、記録がある中ではオーストラリアの史上最高気温です。
さらにこの気温は、南半球全体の高温記録でもあります。
豪州気象局の記録を見てみると、同日には同じく西オーストラリア州のローボーン空港やマーディーでも５０・５度という、国内記録に並ぶほどの高温が観測されていました。

記録が出た当時、弱い低気圧の影響で、オンズローには南東風が吹いていました。南東側には砂漠が広がっていますから、つまり砂漠由来の熱風が流れ込んでいたことになります。
