Antarctic temperatures reach all time high: Earth’s coldest continent experiences two-day heatwave hitting 63.5°F

Antarctica has experienced its highest temperature on record, according to meteorologists.
Sensors at Argentina’s Esperanza Base on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula recorded a temperature of 17.5°C (63.5°F).
According to meteorologists this is potentially a new record for the warmest temperature measured on the frozen continent.

Over a two day period last week temperatures reached 17.4°C (63.3°F) and 17.5°C (63.5°F).

However, the heatwave on the coldest continent on Earth has still to be officially certified by the World Meteorological Organisation.
The previous hottest temperature recorded in Antarctica – which is usually the coldest place on Earth – was in April 24 1961 when the temperature reached 17.1°C (62.8°F).

　【シドニー＝共同】南極大陸の半島部分で、南極としては過去最高の可能性がある気温１７.５度が観測されていたことが分かった。英紙ガーディアン（電子版）などが２日までに報じた。これまでの最高気温は１９６１年に同じ地点で観測した１７.１度とされている。今回の観測気温が正式に確認されれば、地球温暖化の影響を示すとの見方が出そうだ。
　観測地点は南極半島のエスペランサ基地（アルゼンチン）で、３月２４日に記録した。同紙によると、前日にも近くのマランビオ基地（同）で１７.４度が観測された。
　今回の気温について、観測の妥当性を判断する世界気象機関（ＷＭＯ）が観測機器の状態や観測の手法、周辺の気温との整合性を検証している。
　エスペランサ基地は南米大陸に向かって突き出た半島の先端部分にあり、南極圏の外に位置することから、同基地の気温を「南極の気温」とみなすのが妥当かどうか議論の余地もあると同紙は伝えている。南極点の近くでは７４年に観測した１５度が最高とみられている。

南極半島のエスペランサ基地では史上最も温かい気温「１７．５℃」を記録したという。実は南極は最も温暖化の影響をうけやすい地域であるという。だが、この記録正式に「世界気象機関」に認められたものではなく、あくまでその基地で計測した気温がそのような数値となっただけにすぎない。
温暖化の影響は南米から吹き付ける暖かい風や、西南極半島などのフェーン現象によるものだというが、今問題視されている地球温暖化の影響で気温が異常に上がってしまったのであれば心配だ。

世界気象機関に認定されている南極の最高気温は、１９６１年４月２４日の１７.１℃だそうだ。今回は０.４度ＵＰの非公式な記録更新ということ。

これから北半球が夏に向かうから、今度は北極海の解氷が進む？
