Billboard R&B Chart Peak: 3

Allen Miller and his Orchestra – It Can’t Be Wrong(1943)
with unidentified vocalist

Tagging behind the best-selling Dick Haymes version was this second highest charting recording of the lovely Max Steiner melody from “Now Voyager.”
Quality note: This is a HIT label record, which during the current Recording Ban (a strike by the American Federation of Musicians) usually signaled sub-par quality…in performance, engineering, and shellac. But those HIT’s, clandestinely recorded without union authorization by anonymous artists (somewhere across the border, according to some rumors), did provide record buyers with something they could not obtain anywhere else…newly-produced big band recordings of various popular song hits that emerged during the year 1943. Usually the only option for the crippled domestic labels was to release the tune via a cappella vocal arrangements.

Dick Haymes and The Song Spinners – It Can’t Be Wrong(1943)

(a cappella)
Fans of the classic 1942 Bette Davis film “Now Voyager” should recognize this Max Steiner melody, heard several times during the movie….and used again in the 1944 film “Mildred Pierce.” Adding Kim Gannon’s lyrics, “It Can’t Be Wrong” became a pop ballad hit that spent 20 weeks on “Your Hit Parade” and gave Dick Haymes a #2 charted best-seller.
This is a’recording ban’ hit, performed a cappella (all vocal…no musical instruments) due to the ongoing strike against the recording industry by James C. Petrillo’s American Federation of Musicians which began August 1, 1942, and remained in effect for each of the major labels until they reached agreement on a new contract with the union.
