– Yahoo!

Spoken introductions to the four instrumental tracks on this album are provided by Gene Hamilton. Wikipedia’s entry “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” has additional details about the program.
All eight of these individual album tracks are also available for continuous sequential listening in a single 25-minute video posted under the title “1941 full album: NBC’s Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street II”

Graham Bonney – Why Can’t We Be Friends(1965/11)
シングル “My Little World Is All Blue” のB面。
UK

No, this is not the much celebrated hit by 70’s funk band War. This is a much earlier track penned by Graham Bonney himself under his birth surname “Bradly”.
Graham began his music career in the UK as a member of The Riot Squad in 1964. The next year he went solo and even had a hit in’66 with “Super Girl”. Later in the decade he relocated to Germany and found success with a string of German sung songs in the late 60’s and into the 70’s. Much of Mr. Bonney’s English material released on the Columbia label throughout the 60’s was overshadowed by the German releases. This is not to say these songs were in any way inferior to songs that became hits. Graham just struck a chord and found an audience in Germany.
Witness the song here which finds Mr. Bonney in fine voice with nice orchestration including an oboe, which is the instrument that always makes me swoon. Hard to believe this track was a B-side to his earliest release. The A-side “My Little World Is All Blue”, also written by Graham along with Barry Mason, is a nice track, I just prefer “Why Can’t We Be Friends”.

This and the flip side “How Sweet You Are” made up Jo’s very first solo-billed Capitol single. The original label credited the 1943 Warner Brothers drama “Old Acquaintance” (Bette Davis & Miriam Hopkins), but IMDb does not indicate that it was heard in the film.

Sonny Kendis and his Stork Club Orchestra – My Buddy(1941)
vocal: Jimmy Saunders(shown as Sonny Saunders)

recorded in NYC May 2, 1941
from the album “A Night At The Stork Club with Sonny Kendis”(1941) originally issued on 78rpm Columbia 36395
Vocal by Jimmy Saunders (shown as ‘Sonny Saunders’). Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson wrote this melancholy post-WWI ballad, with Henry Burr’s 1922 recording for Victor the most successful.
Track #7 of eight posted sides from the 1941 Columbia Records album set C-75 “A Night At The Stork Club,” dance arrangements of pre-1930 tunes conducted by Sonny Kendis, piano-playing leader of the small band at New York’s famed night spot The Stork Club. Though Kendis was given label credit on the original 78 discs, you’ll note that his name did not appear on the album’s cover or anywhere among the inside notes. It was prominently displayed, however, on Columbia’s later LP reissue…scans of which can be seen during the video. All eight of these individual album tracks are also available for continuous sequential listening in a single 21-minute video posted under the title “1941 full album: A Night At The Stork Club with Sonny Kendis.”

T. Dorsey Family(Mountain Branch) – Friendship(1940)
The Pied Pipers as “T. Dorsey Family(Mountain Branch)”

with organ accompaniment by Fred Stulce
recorded in NYC June 26, 1940
Victor Records was having a bit of fun here, issuing this ‘hillbilly’ treatment of the Cole Porter song on the Bluebird 78 flip of the satirical Charlie Barnet ‘sweet bands’ send-up “The Wrong Idea”. Porter’s song from the stage musical “DuBarry Was A Lady,” starring Ethel Merman and Bert Lahr, was most-popularly recorded by the Kay Kyser band

Kay Kyser and his Orchestra – Friendship(1940)
vocal: Harry Babbitt, Ginny Simms, Jack Martin and Ish Kabibble

Great fun from the Kyser crew on this Cole Porter tune from “DuBarry Was A Lady.” Also from that show was the song “Do I Love You” (see the Leo Reisman recording).

Sing and Sweat with Charlie Barnet – The Wrong Idea(1939)
Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra
spoken intro by Barnet
vocal by Billy May
“Don’t plat it good, just play it cute
And make it rootie-tootie toot-toot
Doesn’t do any good to get hep
So swing and sweat with Charlie Barnet”

recorded in Hollywood October 9, 1939.
Swing and sweat with Charlie Barnet! While hardly a mainstream ‘hit record’ upon release, this satirical Billy May arrangement which openly ridicules the styles of various popular ‘Mickey Mouse’ or ‘sweet band’ orchestras of the time remains well-known to many long-time record collectors and fans of that musical era.
As for the title…the Barnet band had previously recorded the instrumentals “The Duke’s Idea” and “The Count’s Idea.” This particular session also yielded “The Right Idea.” Perhaps recorded as a joke not initially meant for public release, “The Wrong Idea” was eventually issued by Bluebird many months later in mid-1940.

This 78rpm-issued vocal track was one of three versions of the sentimental ballad recorded by the Jones orchestra. An all-instrumental arrangement from the same session date as this post remained unissued for decades but is the one most commonly found. And the song was included as part of a medley on the RCA program transcription disc (10-inch LP) “Popular Selections,” .

This and the flip side “Bigger And Better Than Ever” were songs from the 1929 edition of the “George White’s Scandals” revue (161 performances).
‘Ted Wallace’ was one of the pseudonyms used on record by bandleader-vocalist-organizer Wallace T. “Ed” Kirkeby, who is also remembered as manager of the California Ramblers and Fats Waller.

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra – Little Pal(1929)
vocal: Bing Crosby

arranged by Ferde Grofe
recorded in NYC April 25, 1929
A much more bright-spirited treatment of the tune which was popularized by Al Jolson as an over-the-top weeper on record and in his 1929 film “Say It With Songs.”

Al Jolson – Little Pal(1929)
orchestra conducted by Louis Silvers
pal=友だち、友人、相棒

recorded in Los Angeles April 7, 1929
Was he serious? Jolson’s over-the-top weeper was an obvious attempt to repeat the huge success of his recent “Sonny Boy” hit. This one was featured in Al’s 1929 musical screen drama “Say It With Songs,” as was the brighter 78 flip side “I’m In Seventh Heaven”. For the Paul Whiteman/Bing Crosby version of “Little Pal,”

“For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow”

recorded in NYC October 2, 1917

This familiar chant was a lyrical adaptation of a melody from Arthur Sullivan’s comic opera “The Pirates Of Penzance”; and the accompanying vocal group heard here would soon change its name on most recordings to the more commonly-recognized Peerless Quartet.
