「大脱走」ブロンソンのモデル

第２次世界大戦中、ドイツ軍の捕虜収容所から集団脱走を企て、ハリウッド映画「大脱走」でチャールズ・ブロンソン演じるトンネル掘りのモデルになった英国の元空軍軍人エリック・ダウリング氏がこのほど英ブリストルの老人ホームで死去した。９２歳だった。７日付の英紙は「大脱走の真の英雄死す」（デーリー・ミラー）などと報じている。

今年（２００８年）１月１８日、同じく『大脱走』のモデルとなったバートラム・ジェームズ元英空軍少佐がやはり享年９２で亡くなってます。
人間の営為が名実ともに歴史となるには、少なくとも百年は必要ということでしょう。

第２次世界大戦（World War II）中にドイツ軍の捕虜収容所から脱走し、映画『大脱走（The Great Escape）』の原作モデルとなった元連合国軍将校で、現在まで生存していた２人のうちの１人、オーストラリア人のポール・ロイル（Paul Royle）氏が豪西部パース（Perth）の病院で死去した。１０１歳。同氏の息子が２８日、明らかにした。
　同氏の死去により、英国人のディック・チャーチル（Dick Churchil）氏（９４）が唯一の生存者となる。
　英空軍（Royal Air Force、RAF）大尉だったロイル氏は、１９４４年３月の凍えるように寒い日に、ポーランド西部にあったドイツの第３捕虜収容所（Stalag Luft III）から３本のトンネルを掘って脱走した７６人の１人。無事に脱走を果たしたのは３人だけで、残りはナチス・ドイツ（Nazi）の秘密国家警察ゲシュタポ（Gestapo）に捕らえられ、うち５０人はアドルフ・ヒトラー（Adolf Hitler）の命令で処刑された。
　この脱走劇は、１９６０年代に米ハリウッド（Hollywood）の名俳優スティーヴ・マックィーン（Steve McQueen）や英映画監督・俳優リチャード・アッテンボロー（Richard Attenborough）らが出演した映画で広く知られている。

This day in 1944 marks the first day of what has come to be known as’The Great Escape’ – when 76 allied prisoners of war broke out of the German camp Stalag Luft III. In 1968 British Movietone reported on a pub in London’s St. Pancras, that was opened to commemorate the daring exploits of those prisoners who managed to fool Nazi Security.
A St. Pancras Pub changes its name to “The Escapers” and is re-designed to commemorate the daring exploits of Prisoners of War who managed to fool Nazi Security.
