合唱で先走って歌ってしまった。カラオケで手拍子のテンポが狂ってしまった。ライブで感極まるも、腕をあげるタイミングが周囲とずれていた――そんな経験に心あたりがないだろうか（わたしは大いにある）。『日本人とリズム感』（樋口桂子/青土社）は、著者がチェロ教室でつきつけられた「あなたはリズム感が悪い」という言葉が執筆のきっかけだったという。
なぜリズム感が悪いのか。素朴な疑問が、まずは日本と西洋との違いへのまなざしとなる。まえがきでは象徴的なエピソードが紹介されている。イタリア人と日本人との会話をみていた著者は、両者のうなずきかたが逆であることに気づいた。日本人は「そう、そう」と上から下へ打ち下ろすようにあごを動かす。一方でイタリア人の相槌は、むしろ上方に向かっていたのだという。しかも日本人が”タン、タン”と正拍でうなずくのに対し、イタリア人は”ンタンタ”と裏拍で相槌を打っていた。またそのイタリア人は、タクシーで流れた演歌の歌声に「この歌手は腹でも痛いのか」と心配げな反応をした。＜執筆のきっかけは「あなたはリズム感が悪い」の一言から! 日本人がもつリズム感のルーツをさぐる旅 ダ・ヴィンチニュース より一部引用＞

それでつい先走ってしまい、何かとタイミングが合わない。
そういう人間だから、時間芸術である音楽・歌唱はもちろん、スポーツやダンス、車の運転などもまったくの不向き。
