オーストラリア南東部では、２月２０日過ぎ頃から雨が断続的に降り続き、各地で洪水が発生。３月４日時点で少なくとも１７人が死亡するなど、「１,０００年に一度」と言われる観測史上最悪の豪雨に見舞われている。
覚えている人もいるかもしれないが、南東部は、昨年の３月にも「１００年に一度」の大洪水と言われたほど、記録的な豪雨に見舞われた。しかし、今回はそれをはるかに上回る大規模洪水となっており、昨年よりも広範囲かつ、より深刻な被害となっている。
被災エリアは、クイーンズランド州からニューサウスウェールズ州の２州にかけてのとてつもない広域に及び、各所で川が氾濫。低地に大量の雨水が流れ込むなどしているため、市街地や住宅地がほぼ完全に泥水に飲み込まれてしまった町もあるほどだ。ときおり暴風を伴った雨は、既に２週間近く続いており、ほぼ毎日、「荒天警報」が発令されるという、まさに、止まらない雨との格闘が続いている。
