キラウエア火山は現地時間の２０日夜、山頂にあるハレマウマウ火口で噴火が起き、キラウエア火山観測所は警戒レベルを「警告」に引き上げた。
火山灰は貿易風によって南西へ押し流されると災害対策当局は予想、ウッドバレー、パハラ、ナアレフ、オーシャンビューなどでは降灰が予想されるとして屋内にとどまるよう呼びかけた。
米地質調査所の地震観測サイトによると、現地時間の２０日には噴火を前に、ハワイ島東部のヒロ付近でマグニチュード（Ｍ）４・４の地震が発生した。
ほかにもＭ２・５～２・７の地震が、その前の数時間の間に少なくとも７回観測されていた。

噴火による水蒸気の噴出や降灰も確認されていて、付近の住民は屋内にとどまるよう勧告されています。
またハワイ火山観測所によりますと火山の南側ではマグニチュード4.4の地震も観測されたということです。
この地震の規模は2018年に数百軒の家屋が溶岩流で破壊された大規模噴火以来の大きさだったということです。
