At least 5 killed, thousands rescued in flood-ravaged Louisiana
Brunt of the storm that brought torrential rains now moving west toward TexasU.S. President Barack Obama issued a disaster declaration on Sunday for flood-ravaged Louisiana, where at least five people have died and emergency crews have rescued more than 7,000 people stranded by historic flooding.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said residents had been pulled from swamped cars, flooded homes and threatened hospitals across the southern part of the state.
The already soaked region is expected to get more rain from a storm system stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley.
While the brunt of the storm that brought torrential rains was moving west toward Texas, Louisiana residents should remain cautious, the governor said at a news conference.
“Even with the sunshine out today intermittently, the waters are going to continue to rise in many areas, so this is no time to let the guard down,” Edwards said, calling the flooding unprecedented.

８月１２日からの大雨の影響で、アメリカのルイジアナ州に洪水が発生し、ジョン・ベル・エドワード州知事が非常事態を宣言。甚大な被害がもたらされ、４人の死亡が確認され、２万人が救助されたと発表している。
せい惨な現地の様子は、州警察がFacebookで伝えている。多くの道路が浸水で閉鎖され、一部ではボートによる救助活動が行われているもよう。
天候は落ち着いたものの、非常事態は継続。州知事はTwitterでも注意喚起を続け、交通や避難所に関する情報を周知している。

米南部ルイジアナ（Louisiana）州で、１１日夜から続く豪雨による大規模な洪水の死者は６人となり、自宅からの避難を余儀なくされた住民は２万人以上に上っている。
当局によると、約１万人の住民が避難所での生活を強いられているという。
これまでの総雨量は、ニューオーリンズ（New Orleans）とバトンルージュ（Baton Rouge）地域の５か所で５００ミリを超えた。
ルイジアナ州のジョン・ベル・エドワーズ（John Bel Edwards）知事の報道官は、今回の洪水で６人が死亡したと発表。また世帯と事業所合わせて約４万軒が停電しているという。ホワイトハウス（White House）は州内の４郡を、大規模災害地域に指定した。
